Bleeding Reel Lift Cylinder System

If hoses have been disconnected from cylinder, or if reel will not remain level with cutterbar, trapped air must be bled from cylinders and lines.

NOTE: This procedure requires two people.

      A - Bleed Plug

Raise reel completely, engage cylinder safety stops, and lower reel.

    2. Open bleed plug (A) on left-hand lift cylinder.

    3. CAUTION: Hydraulic pressure can increase quickly resulting in serious injury. Increase pressure slowly during bleeding procedure.

Press and hold reel raise button until escaping oil is free of air bubbles.

    4. IMPORTANT: Bleed plug must be tight or air will get into system again.

      Tighten plug to specification.

    Split Reel Platform:

    1. IMPORTANT: Bleeding a split reel lift system requires a DR port-compatible, female coupler with attached hose for each side of the platform (see your John Deere dealer).

Lower platform to the ground, lower reel completely, shut OFF engine, set parking brake, and remove key.

    2. NOTE: Clean fittings and surrounding area before performing any work on hydraulic system.

Connect a female coupler with hose to DR port (B) on both outside reel lift cylinders.

    3. IMPORTANT: Reel must be lowered before opening valves. Opening valves with reel raised can cause sudden arm movement resulting in platform damage.

      Open both valve handles (A).

    4. Start combine and hold reel raise button until oil is free of air bubbles.

    5. Shut OFF engine, set parking brake, and remove key.

    6. Remove couplers from outside lift cylinders.

    7. IMPORTANT: Do not raise reel more than half way while valves are open, or transfer of oil may damage platform.

Start combine and partially raise and lower reel several times.

    8. With reel completely lowered, close both valve handles (A).
