Cutting Platform

SymptomProblemSolution

Shattering of Grain Ahead of Cutterbar

Reel speed not matched to ground speed, causing crop to be overly disturbed before it is cut.

Adjust reel speed to match with ground speed so reel moves crop evenly. Reel should turn slightly faster than ground speed.

Reel is positioned too low.

Raise reel.

Ground speed too fast for conditions of crop.

Slow down ground speed so reel does not hit crop, causing it to shatter.

Cut Crop Building Up and Falling from Front of Cutterbar or Loss of Grain Heads at Cutterbar

Reel not adjusted low enough for good delivery of cut crop to belts.

Set reel low enough to sweep material from cutterbar.

Reel too far forward.

Move reel closer to cutterbar.

Cutterbar belt angle to steep.

Use tilt adjuster at center of platform to adjust angle of cutterbar.

Ragged and Uneven Cutting of Crop

Feeder house lower shaft not at recommended speed.

Check basic speed of combine (see combine Operator's Manual).

Knife dull.

Replace knife.

Cutterbar plugged with material.

Adjust reel to sweep material off cutterbar.

Knife sections damaged.

Replace damaged sections.

Integral knife hold-downs adjusted loose.

Adjust hold-downs to recommended clearance.

Excessive Material Entering Combine

Cutting too low, trying to get all down and tangled crops.

Cut higher, use pickup reel in down or tangled crops.

Excessive Vibration of Cutting Parts

Feeder house lower shaft not at recommended speed.

Check basic speed of combine (see combine Operator's Manual).

Variable speed feeder house is too fast.

Slow variable speed feeder house (see combine Operator's Manual).

Dual knives not timed properly.

Adjust knife timing (see Service section).

Excessive Knife Drive Shaft Vibration

Knife head to knife drive connection loose.

Inspect connector, replace spacer ring, reset alignment and tighten properly (see Service section).

Heavy knife loads.

Inspect knife sections and guards for worn cutting edges. Replace as needed.

Reel Wrapping in Tangled and Weedy Conditions

Incorrect reel location.

Adjust reel forward and down.

Reel speed too fast.

Slow reel until crop flows smoothly onto belts.

Reel fingers not able to eject material properly.

Install optional Reel Flip-Over Kit (see your John Deere dealer).

Reel Carrying Around Straw

Reel speed too fast.

Slow reel speed. Reel should turn slightly faster than ground speed.

Reel height too low.

Raise reel height to reduce amount of straw gathered by reel.

Pickup fingers pitched too much.

Reduce finger pitch.

Uneven or Bunched Feeding of Crop to Feeder House

Feeder house conveyor chain too slow.

Change to large sprocket on right-hand side of lower feeder house drive shaft.

Feeder house conveyor chain too loose.

Adjust tension (see combine Operator's Manual).

Feeder house drum lower stops set too high.

Adjust lower stops (see combine Operator's Manual). Remove optional feeder house closure strips.

Feeder house drive chain too loose.

Adjust tension (see combine Operator's Manual).

Crop Material Back-feeding at Feed Drum

Feeder house conveyor chain too slow.

Change to large sprocket on right-hand side of lower feeder house drive shaft.

Combine not removing material from platform.

Lower feeder house front drum (see combine Operator's Manual).

Set drag chain to high speed (see combine Operator's Manual).

Properly tension drag chain and drive chain (see combine Operator's Manual).

Set combine feed accelerator to high speed (see combine Operator's Manual).

Crop material wraps in the feed drum

Remove outside feed drum fingers (see Adjustments—Feeding Related section).

Crop Material Pulled Underneath Side Belts from Center Belt Area

Belt speed too slow allowing buildup on sides of the center belt.

Increase belt speed.

Belt speed too fast forcing crop material across center belt and pulled under platform by opposite side belt.

Decrease belt speed.

Crop Material Pulled Underneath Center Belt

Feed drum finger pitch incorrect.

Advance feed drum timing casting.

Center belt slipping.

Increase belt tension.

Belt splice joint too high.

Trim off excess belt material.

Combine not removing material from platform.

Lower feeder house front drum (see combine Operator's Manual).

Set drag chain to high speed (see combine Operator's Manual).

Properly tension drag chain and drive chain (see combine Operator's Manual).

Set combine feed accelerator to high speed (see combine Operator's Manual).

Excessive Knife Drive Loads or Inconsistent Cut Heights

Dull knife sections.

Replace knife sections.

Dull knife guard edges.

Replace knife guards.

Excess binding between top of knife sections and top of guard slots.

Inspect for bent guards, bent cutterbar, or improper position of guards.

Binding is present at first and second knife guard slot.

See Service section for adjustments.

Incorrect setting of knife drive head.

See Service section for adjustments.

Incorrect setting of knife hold downs.

See Service section for adjustments.

Crop build up at end shields.

Open and clean out end shields.

Hydraulic Leak Detected At Multi-Coupler

Leaking O-ring.

See your John Deere dealer.

Uneven Reel Height and Fore/Aft

Reel cylinders out of phase.

Rephase cylinders (see Adjustments—Reel section).
