Inspect Fan Belt Tensioner—6.8 L Engine

    A - Cap Screw

    B - Cap Screw and Nut

    C - Right-Hand Engine Side Shield

    D - Breaker Bar

    E - Tensioner

    F - Alternator Pulley

    Raise Hood.



  2. Remove cap screw (A) and cap screw and nut (B), lift right-hand engine side shield (C) off of alignment studs.

  3. Release tension on belt using a 13 mm (1/2 in.) breaker bar (D).

  4. Remove belt from alternator pulley (F).

  5. Carefully release tensioner.

  6. Remove belt from remaining pulleys.

    A - Torque Wrench

    B - Mark on Tension Arm

    C - Mark on Mounting Bracket

    Measure 21 mm (13/16 in.) from (B) and put a mark (C) on mounting bracket.



  8. Rotate tension arm with torque wrench (A) until marks (B and C) align. If torque wrench measurement is not within specification, replace tensioner mechanism. (See your John Deere dealer.)

  9. Install belt and side shield.

  10. Lower hood.
