Prepare Machine for Storage

  1. Clean machine thoroughly, inside and out. (See Clean Vehicle Of Hazardous Chemicals, Including Pesticides in this section.)

  2. Clean and flush solution system. (See Cleaning Solution System in this section.)

  3. Open pipe plug on solution pump to remove any chemicals. Replace plug.

  4. Remove, clean and install fill strainer, pressure strainers and flowmeter(s).

  5. Add approximately 132—159 L (35—42 gal.) of appropriate mixture of SprayMaster Winterizer Fluid. Following manufacturers directions, mix SprayMaster Winterizer Fluid at the correct ratio to protect the solution system down to the lowest expected temperature.

  6. Start machine and operate spray system until winterizer fluid mixture comes out of spray nozzles. Be sure to circulate mixture through entire solution system, including optional devices (fence row nozzles and eductor). Operate pressure valve to send solution through rinse balls.

  7. Remove and clean nozzle tips and screens. Store tips and screens off the machine, in a dry place.

    A - Clamp

    B - Hose Fitting

    C - Suction Valve

    Drain the following tanks:

    • Rinse tank—Drain by removing band clamp (A) between hose fitting (B) and suction valve (C). Angle hose down to let water drain.
    • Hand rinse tank—Empty through valve.

  9. Prepare foam marker system for cold weather. (See Prepare Foam Marker System For Cold Weather Storage in this section.)

    A - Hydrostatic Filters

    B - Hydraulic Filter

Replace hydrostatic filters (A) and hydraulic filter (B).

    A - Planetary Hubs

Drain planetary hubs (A). (See Change Planetary Hub Oil in the Lubrication And Maintenance section).

  12. Fill planetary hub oil to proper level.

  13. Lubricate all grease fittings. Apply grease to exposed area of hydraulic cylinder rods and chrome suspension rods.

  14. Paint as necessary to prevent rust.

  15. Treat exposed surfaces with coating TY25396 to prevent corrosion and rust.

  16. NOTE: Instructions for lifting machine can be found in Install Optional Tires in Wheels and Tires section.

Lift each corner of machine and support with JDG10393 stand or equivalent to take weight off tires. Do not deflate tires.

  17. CAUTION: DO NOT use gasoline for washing. Gasoline is highly flammable and can ignite if exposed to sparks or open flame, causing a fire which can cause serious injury or death to you or others.

Wash engine using a safe solvent.

  18. Remove, clean, and install air cleaner elements.

  19. With engine warm, drain oil from crankcase. Replace oil filter and fill crankcase to proper level.

  20. Drain and flush cooling system (engine block and radiator).

  21. NOTE: (For warm weather climates) If antifreeze has not and will not be added in engine, be sure to remove plug to drain engine oil cooler. Add clean soft water with John Deere Summer Engine Coolant Conditioner, or equivalent, in place of antifreeze.

Fill cooling system with antifreeze, to proper level. Use antifreeze that does not contain stop-leak additives.

  22. Operate engine at low idle for a few minutes to circulate coolant and crankcase oil.

    A - Monitor

Remove monitor (A) and store in a warm, dry place.

  24. IMPORTANT: On Final Tier 4/Stage IV engine equipped machines, do not disconnect battery until LED indicator at battery shutoff is off. Selective Catalytic Reduction system automatically purges lines of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) during this time, immediately after machine is stopped. If adequate time is not allowed for lines to be purged, any DEF remaining in lines can crystallize and plug lines. In freezing weather, DEF will freeze and possibly burst lines.

Disconnect negative (—) battery cables and secure away from battery terminal.

  25. IMPORTANT: Long term storage in vehicle (over six months) is not recommended. If long term storage is necessary, periodic testing of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is recommended to ensure that urea concentration does not fall out of specification.

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) has a limited shelf life, but may be stored in vehicle for as long as six months, depending upon storage conditions. See Handling and Storing Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) (Final Tier 4 and Stage IV) in Fuels, Lubricants, and Coolants section in this manual. If draining DEF tank is necessary, see Drain and Flush Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Tank in Engine and Drivetrain section in this manual for proper procedure.

  26. Seal the following openings with tape and/or plastic bags.

    • Exhaust pipe
    • Air cleaner intake
    • Engine dipstick tube
    • Engine oil fill tube
    • Crankcase breather tube

  27. Leave a note in the cab detailing what was done for winter protection so that the next person to use the machine will know what kind of preparation is needed for field operation.
