Change Engine Oil

IMPORTANT: If John Deere Plus-50™ II oil is used, the engine oil replacement interval can be extended from 250 to 375 hours for Tier 2-Stage II Engine or from 250 to 500 hours for Tier 3-Stage IIIA Engine. The hours extended oil change interval is only allowed if all the following conditions are met:

  • For Tier 3-Stage III engines, use a diesel fuel with sulfur content less than 2000 mg/kg (2000 ppm) for M4030 Self-Propelled Sprayer and less than 1000 mg/kg (1000 ppm) for M4040 Self-Propelled Sprayer
  • For Tier 2-Stage II engines, use a diesel fuel with sulfur content less than 2000 mg/kg (2000 ppm)
  • Use John Deere Plus-50™ II oil
  • Use an approved John Deere oil filter

NOTE: A better draining of oil and debris is obtained when the oil is warm.

  1. Start up the engine and let it run for 5 minutes.

  2. Shut off the engine.

  3. Park the machine on level ground.

    Place a suitable container under the engine drain plug (A).



  5. Remove the engine drain plug (A).

  6. Drain the engine oil.

  7. Install the engine drain plug (A).

  8. Open and raise the hood.

  9. Replace the engine oil filter. (See Replace Engine Oil Filter in this Section.)

    Add the specified oil via filler neck (C).

    NOTE:

    • Check the engine oil capacity in Specifications Section.
    • Use John Deere oil as specified in Lubricants—M4030 Self-Propelled Sprayer or Lubricants—M4040 Self-Propelled Sprayer section, according to the sprayer model.



  11. Start up the engine and check the machine for oil leaks.

  12. Shut off the engine.

  13. Wait 5 minutes and check the engine oil level with the oil dipstick (B). Add oil if necessary.
