Using Troubleshooting Chart

If you are experiencing a problem that is not listed in this chart, see your John Deere dealer for service.

When you have checked all the possible causes listed and you are still experiencing the problem, see your John Deere dealer.

Symptom Problem Solution

Backhoe runs slow

Engine is not warmed up.

Run engine five minutes before using backhoe.

Engine speed is low.

Run engine faster.

Backhoe does not run smoothly.

Tractor hydraulic oil level low.

Check hydraulic oil level.

Air in hydraulic oil lines.

Bleed air from hydraulic oil lines.

Hydraulic oil lines not connected properly.

Check hydraulic quick-disconnect couplers for full engagement.

Backhoe needs lubrication.

Lubricate backhoe grease points.

Backhoe will not swing.

Swing lock pin is installed.

Remove boom lock pin.

Tractor hydraulic oil level low.

Check hydraulic oil level.

Backhoe will not operate.

Debris inside valve cover.

Clean debris from inside of valve covers.

Backhoe will not hold position.

Hydraulics are leaking.

Tighten leaking hydraulic connections.

Replace leaking hydraulic lines.

Tractor hydraulic oil level low.

Check hydraulic oil level.

Tractor hydraulic oil is dirty.

Change hydraulic oil, if necessary.

Tractor will not lift backhoe high enough to install L-pins (4200-4700 Tractors).

Rockshaft position needs adjustment.
