Checking and Cleaning Air Cleaner Elements

1. Park machine safely (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section).

2. Lift hood.

   Turn thumbscrews (A) 1/4 turn counterclockwise and lift cover to remove.

4. IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Avoid allowing any dirt or debris to fall into air intake when removing the air filter. Remove any large debris or loose dirt before proceeding.

   Loosen air filter clamp by turning thumbscrew (B) counterclockwise until clamp loosens. Carefully lift the filter element (C) out of the air cleaner base.

   Remove the foam precleaner (D) from the paper filter element (E). If the foam precleaner is dirty:
   • Wash precleaner in a solution of warm water and liquid detergent.
   • NOTE: Do not put engine oil on pre-cleaner. Engine oil wicks into the paper filter element and results in poor engine performance.
     Rinse precleaner thoroughly. Squeeze out excess water in a dry cloth until precleaner is completely dry.
   • Replace the precleaner if damaged or missing.

6. IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Dirt and debris enters the engine through a damaged filter element:

   • Do not wash paper element.
   • Do not attempt to clean paper element by tapping against another object.
   • Do not use pressurized air to clean element.
   • Replace element only if it is very dirty, damaged or the seal is cracked.
   
   

   Inspect paper filter element (E). Replace the filter element if damaged or dirty.

   Clean air cleaner base (F) very carefully, preventing any dirt from falling into air intake tube (G).

8. Install foam precleaner (D) on paper filter element (E). Position air filter in air filter base and on air intake tube (G). Align air filter clamp on intake tube groove and tighten clamp by turning thumbscrew clockwise until secure.

9. Install air cleaner cover on engine and turn thumbscrews (A) 1/4 turn clockwise to secure.

10. Lower hood.
