Cleaning Engine Shroud (X590)

CAUTION: Avoid injury! Compressed air causes debris to fly a long distance.

  • Clear work area of bystanders.
  • Wear eye protection when using compressed air for cleaning purposes.
  • Reduce compressed air pressure to 210 kPa (2.10 bar) (30 psi).

CAUTION: Avoid injury! Touching hot surfaces burns skin. The engine, components, and fluids are hot if the engine has been running. Allow the engine to cool before servicing or working near the engine and components.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! An obstructed air intake screen causes engine damage due to overheating. Tto allow adequate air intake, keep air intake screen and other external surfaces of the engine, including cooling fins, clean.

  1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)

  2. Remove hood. (See Removing and Installing Hood in SERVICE MISCELLANEOUS Section.)

  3. Clean air intake screen and external engine surfaces. (See Cleaning Air Intake Screen and Engine Fins in SERVICE ENGINE Section.)

    Remove air cleaner cover (A).


  5. Look through clean-out ports (B) and check for debris on top of the cylinder heads. Remove debris.

  6. Remove three screws and rotating screen (C).

  7. IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Be careful to maintain position of fuel pump assembly (D), clips (E) for fuel line, and any other attached components when removing parts from the side of the engine.

    Remove screws (F) and fuel pump (D).

  8. Remove the voltage regulator from the right side of the engine shroud.

  9. Remove bolt (G) securing the oil fill tube to the side of the engine.

  10. Remove remaining bolts and engine shroud (H).

    Clean debris from:

    • Fan areas (I)
    • Cylinder head cooling fins (J)
    • Area between engine and frame


  12. IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! The engine shroud must be assembled so that the slots in the shroud align with the ridge in the air intake and mating surfaces along the sides of the engine. Failure to assemble correctly prevents the air filter from sealing and causes engine damage.

    Install shroud, voltage regulator, fuel pump, fuel line clip, and oil fill tube with hardware.

  13. Install rotating screen with three screws. Tighten screws.

  14. Install air filter and air cleaner cover.

  15. Install hood.
