Checking Battery Electrolyte Levels

Help prevent serious injury or death from an electrical shock or electrocution. This utility vehicle is equipped with a 48 volt electrical system which is capable of passing a high voltage electrical current. Always use extreme caution when servicing the battery set in this vehicle.

  • Only trained technicians or owners that have knowledge and experience with electrical maintenance should repair or service this vehicle.
  • Explosive mixtures of hydrogen gas are present within battery cells. Do not service or charge vehicle batteries in an area where open flames, sparks, cigarettes, or any other source of combustion are present.
  • Remove all jewelry (watches, rings, bracelets, etc.) before servicing the electrical system or batteries.
  • Do not touch battery terminals, connectors, or wires that are not insulated.
  • Always wear approved eye protection while servicing the vehicle. Wear a full face shield, rubber gloves and rubber apron when servicing the batteries.
  • Battery electrolyte is poisonous and causes severe burns. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing.

Antidotes:

  • EXTERNAL: Flush with water for at least 20 minutes. Call a physician immediately.
  • INTERNAL: Drink large quantities of milk or water. Follow with Milk of Magnesia or vegetable oil. Call a physician immediately.
  • EYES: Flush with water for at least 20 minutes and get prompt medical attention.

Checking and maintaining electrolyte levels is important to the care and life of the batteries. Improper care of the batteries can lead to premature battery failure due to cell dilution and imbalance.

Electrolyte levels drop during discharge and rise during charging. Therefore, it is essential that the electrolyte levels be checked:

  • After each week the vehicle is used.
  • At the recommended service interval if the vehicle is in storage. (Refer to the Service Intervals section.)

To maintain specific gravity balance, battery fluids should be the same in all 24 cells.
