Replacing Split-Tension Bushings
1.
Remove 1/2 x 5 in. bolt (A) and nut and retain.
2.
Remove 7/8 x 18-1/2 in. special bolt (tool) (B), flanged washer (D), and nut (E) from Operator's Manual holder plate (C).

CAUTION:
Spring (C) is strongly compressed. Do not attempt to loosen or remove spring without using tool provided with machine. Loosening or removing spring without using tool can cause serious injury.
NOTE:
To keep nut (E) turning freely, lubricate threads periodically while using tool.

Insert tool (A) with flanged washer (B) and 7/8 in. nut (E) directly through spring (C) middle, aligning bolt hole at tool bottom end with standard spring plate bottom hole.
4.
Secure tool to spring plate bottom end with 1/2 x 5 in. bolt (D) and nut removed from Operator's Manual holder plate.
5.
Compress spring by turning nut (E) clockwise until tension is off pivot bolt (F).
6.
Remove pivot bolt.
7.
Remove chrome bushing (not shown).

8.
Drive out old split-tension bushing (A) with 22 mm (7/8 in.) round stock (B).

IMPORTANT:
Center spring end (A) in gap (B) before installing new bushing.
9.
If spring end (A) is not centered in gap (B), loosen tool until spring can be rotated to correct position.
10.
Tighten tool until split-tension bushing can be installed.

IMPORTANT:
Avoid unnecessary bushing wear. Install bushing split (A) within 45° radius, as shown.
Bushing MUST NOT protrude from either shank side.
11.
Position bushing split (A) as shown. Install new split-tension bushing with 22 mm (7/8 in.) round stock.
12.
Install chrome bushing (not shown).

13.
Install pivot bolt (E).
14.
Turn 7/8 in. nut (D) counterclockwise to loosen spring (C) until pressure is against pivot bolt.
15.
Remove 1/2 x 5 in. bolt (B) and nut.
16.
Remove tool (A), with nut and flanged washer (F). Return tool to holder when done.
17.
Tighten pivot bolt nut to specification.
