Starting Engine

causym CAUTION: If machine should suddenly move forward when starting, serious injury or death to you or others could result. Verify parking brake is set and no one is standing near machine when engine is started.

IMPORTANT: Certain precautions should be taken when starting an engine in cold temperatures. (See Starting Engine in Cold Weather and Warming Engine in this section to avoid damage to engine.)

NOTE: Picture of control console does not necessarily indicate the position of levers and switches stated in steps.

1. Transmission is in neutral.

2. Position hydro lever (A) in neutral.

3. Place fan switch (C) and row units switch (D) in off position.

4. Place throttle switch (B) in idle position.

5. Turn off all accessories such as radio, lights, heater/air conditioning fan and windshield wiper.

6. Turn key (E) to "ON" position.

7. With key ON and engine off:

a. Fuel gauge (A) needle will rise to show fuel level in the tank. Verify machine has plenty of fuel.

b. When "cold" starting, engine coolant temperature gauge (B) needle will stay on the left-hand (cold) end of the temperature range. If restarting a hot engine, gauge needle will rise to show current coolant temperature.

c. Voltmeter (C) needle should rise slightly above the red and black band (12.0 volts) into "normal" range. If voltage is low, batteries are undercharged and engine may be hard to start. (See your John Deere dealer if batteries are not charging properly).

d. Engine oil pressure indicator light (D) and parking brake indicator light (E) (if parking brake is engaged) should now be illuminated. If indicator lights fail to illuminate, turn off key switch and determine cause.

(To perform bulb check procedure, see Checking Indicator Display Panel Bulbs in Operators Station section).

causym CAUTION: Sound horn to warn bystanders that the engine is going to be started.

IMPORTANT: Starter damage can result if operated for more than 30 seconds. DO NOT operate starter for more than 30 seconds at a time. If engine does not start, wait at least 2 minutes before trying again.

8. Turn key (A) farther clockwise to "START" position. Release key when engine starts. If key is released before engine starts, wait until starter and engine stop turning before trying again.

IMPORTANT: Engine may be damaged if oil pressure is low or slow to rise. After starting engine, do not accelerate or apply load until engine oil pressure indicator light goes out.

9. Verify engine oil pressure indicator light goes out. Voltmeter (A) needle should move into charging zone.

NOTE: Parking brake indicator will remain on until parking brake is disengaged.

IMPORTANT: Protect turbocharger:

During start up: By not accelerating above 1000 rpm until normal engine low throttle speed is established (900-960 rpm).

Prior to shut-down: By idling for at least one-to-two minutes before stopping engine.

NOTE: Should engine stall while operating under load, re-start engine immediately to prevent overheating.

10. Depress switch (B) to view engine RPM display.
