Breaking-In Engine

NOTE: See LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE section for correct break-in oil to use during break-in period.

The engine is ready for normal operation. However, be cautious during the first 100 hours.

1. Avoid unnecessary engine idling. If cotton picker will be idling longer than 5 minutes, stop engine.

IMPORTANT: New engines are filled with John Deere ENGINE BREAK-IN OIL. Break-in oil WILL NOT provide adequate protection when used after the 100 hour break-in period. After 100 hours change oil. See BREAK-IN SERVICE AND DIESEL ENGINE OIL in Lubrication and Maintenance section.

2. Use dipstick (A) to check engine oil level frequently. Watch for any signs of leaks. If oil must be added during break-in, use oil specified in Lubrication and Maintenance section.

3. Watch coolant temperature gauge (A) closely. If gauge needle rises into the warning zone and/or coolant indicator light comes on, engine is overheating. Shift to lower gear or reduce load by reducing ground speed. Unless temperature drops quickly STOP the engine. If STOP warning light (B) comes on, immediately stop the engine and determine cause of overheating.

causym CAUTION: Explosive release of fluids from pressurized cooling system can cause serious burns.

If radiator cap must be removed, do not remove when engine is hot. Shut engine off and wait until cap is cool enough to touch with bare hands. Slowly loosen cap to first stop to relieve pressure before removing completely.

Never add coolant when engine is overheated. Wait for it to cool.

DO NOT raise basket to remove radiator cap and check radiator. The basket is heavy and can cause serious injury or death to you or others if it falls. Check and remove radiator cap from INSIDE basket only.

Under certain conditions coolant conditioner can cause serious injury or death to you or others. Never inhale or ingest conditioner and avoid contact with skin or eyes. When adding coolant conditioner observe all precautions listed on container.

4. Check coolant level frequently. Watch for any signs of leaks. Coolant level should remain between the cold mark (B) (when the engine is cool) and the hot mark (A) (when the engine is hot).

5. Become thoroughly familiar with the sound and feel of your cotton picker, stay attentive and alert.
