Filling Coolant System

IMPORTANT: Follow this procedure if coolant system has been drained or flushed.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use methoxyl propanol antifreeze in the cooling system or coolants that contain a stop-leak additive. Engine damage maty result. See FUELS, LUBRICANTS AND COOLANTS section for proper coolant specifications.

causym CAUTION: Explosive release of fluids from pressurized cooling system can cause serious burns.

DO NOT raise basket to remove radiator cap and check radiator. The basket is heavy and can cause serious injury or death to you or others if it falls. Check and remove radiator cap from INSIDE basket only.

If radiator cap must be removed, do not remove when engine is hot. Shut engine off and wait until cap is cool enough to touch with bare hands. Slowly loosen cap to first stop to relieve pressure before removing completely.

Never add coolant when engine is overheated. Wait for it to cool.

Under certain conditions coolant conditioner can cause serious injury or death to you or others. Never inhale or ingest conditioner and avoid contact with skin or eyes. When adding coolant conditioner observe all precautions listed on container.

1. Add specified coolant to radiator until filler neck (A) is completely full prior to starting engine if radiator has been drained or if cooling system has been back-flushed. Open heater valves and operate heater. See DIESEL ENGINE COOLANT and all associated coolant information in FUELS, LUBRICANTS AND COOLANT section.

2. Start engine and operate at idle throttle until thermostat opens.

3. Refill radiator to top of filler neck using coolant specified in Step 1.

4. Install and tighten radiator cap.

5. Shut off engine.

6. Fill overflow tank to the "HOT" mark.

NOTE: The coolant level in the overflow recovery tank will go down as air is removed from the cooling system. When coolant is hot, the level in the overflow recovery tank will be higher than when coolant is cold. Coolant should be added to the overflow recovery tank as required, to maintain level between the "HOT" (A) and "COLD" (B) marks when the engine is cold. When coolant is hot the level will be 1.8-3.7 L (2-4 qts) higher than when cold.
