causym CAUTION: If the machine should suddenly move forward when starting, serious injury or death to you or others could result. Make sure park brake is set and no one is standing near the picker when you start the machine.

NOTE: Picture of control console does not necessarily indicate position of levers stated in steps. This is also applicable elsewhere in manual.

1. Position hydro lever (A) in neutral.

2. Set throttle lever (B) 1/3 of the way forward.

3. Turn lighting (C) and accessory switches off before starting engine.

4. Turn key (D) to "ON" position.

5. With key ON and engine off:

  • Fuel gauge (A) needle will rise to show fuel level in the tank. Be sure picker has plenty of fuel.
  • When "cold" starting, coolant temperature gauge (B) needle will stay on the left-hand (cold) end of the temperature range. If restarting a hot engine, gauge needle will rise to show current coolant temperature.
  • Voltmeter (C) needle should rise slightly above the red and black band (12 volts) into "normal" range. If voltage is low, batteries are undercharged and engine may be hard to start. See your John Deere dealer if batteries are not charging properly.
  • Check operation of engine oil pressure indicator (D) and STOP indicator (E). Oil pressure indicator will glow steady and STOP indicator will flash. If lamps fail to illuminate, turn off key switch and determine cause.

NOTE: Park indicator (F) and caution indicator (G) will glow steady if parking brake is engaged.

causym CAUTION: Sound horn to warn bystanders that the engine is going to be started.

6. Turn key halfway between "ON" and "START" positions; just before engine starter engages, all indicator lamps should glow for a bulb check. If lamps do not light, replace bulbs as necessary.

IMPORTANT: Starter damage can result if operated for more than 30 seconds. DO NOT operate starter for more than 30 seconds at a time. If engine does not start, wait at least 2 minutes before trying again.

7. Sound horn to warn bystanders that the engine is going to be started. Turn key switch (A) farther clockwise to "START" position. Release key when engine starts. If key is released before engine starts, wait until starter and engine stop turning before trying again.

IMPORTANT: Engine may be damaged if oil pressure is low or slow to rise. After starting engine, do not accelerate or apply load until engine oil pressure indicator lamp goes out.

8. Be sure engine oil pressure indicator (A) and STOP indicator (B) go out. Voltmeter (C) needle should move into charging zone.

NOTE: Park and caution indicators will stay on if parking brake is engaged.

IMPORTANT: Under normal circumstances, protect turbocharger during:

Start up: By not accelerating above 1000 rpm until normal engine idle speed is established (800-900 rpm).

Shut-down: By idling for at least one-to-two minutes before stopping engine.

NOTE: Should engine stall while operating under load, re-start it immediately to prevent overheating.

9. Depress switch (D) to view engine RPM display.
