Troubleshooting

Symptom Problem Solution

Disks not revolving.

Drill is hitched too high in front so pressure is on boot instead of disk-Single Disk Opener.

Hitch machine properly.

Scrapers adjusted too tight.

Loosen scrapers so they have just sufficient pressure to clean disks. Disengage scrapers when not needed.

Pressure not adjusted properly so furrow opener can float over high and low spots in field.

Adjust pressure on furrow openers so the collar on pressure rod is about 38 mm (1-1/2 in.) above pressure arm swivel.

Openers spaced too close together.

Adjust opener spacing.

Insufficient spacer washers on disk hubs-Double-Disk Openers.

Add washers to hubs.

Lack of penetration or excessive wear on bottom of boot-Single Disk Opener.

Boot adjusted too low.

Adjust boot.

Clogging of grain tubes and furrow openers.

Machine improperly hitched.

Hitch machine properly.

Using high residue seed or lumpy fertilizer.

Use clean seed and dry free-flowing fertilizer.

Stopping machine in field and letting machine roll backward, filling the bottom of boot with dirt.

Raise furrow openers before stopping machine. Do not permit machine to roll backwards if it is necessary to stop without raising furrow openers.

Convolute tube rib collapsed inside opener boot.

Install tube correctly.

Fluted-feed shifter lever difficult to shift.

Dirt on exposed flute.

Remove dirt.

Pressure on feed shaft.

Turn feed shaft back slightly with wrench to relieve pressure.

Symptom Problem Solution

Varying quantities drilled by individual feeds.

Seed bridging in box due to unclean seed, inoculation, treatment, or dampness.

Use agitators.

Feed gates not all set the same.

Adjust gates according to instructions.

Feed cup out of adjustment with the fluted-feed roll.

Adjust feed.

Section of grain box emptying unevenly.

There are more feed cups operating in one section than the other. Sections will empty quicker. Adjust cups or feed stops.

Quantities drilled not agreeing with seed chart.

Feed gates improperly adjusted.

Adjust gates according to instructions.

Heavier or lighter than average weight seed.

Check quantity drilled. Check seed density.

Improper tire inflation, tire size, or tread.

Inflate and inspect tires.

Feed cups not properly set.

Check cup adjustment.

Excessive field speed.

Reduce ground speed.

Excessive spring force on press wheels.

Reduce spring force.

Drive wheel not contacting ground.

Add weight to machine using calcium chloride in tires or wheel weights (H93849). Also, stroke on opener can be limited if necessary.

Symptom Problem Solution

Bunching and skipping.

Improper adjustment of furrow openers resulting in openers not penetrating low spots or "bouncing" over rough ground.

Prepare seedbed, adjust furrow openers and reduce operating speed.

Improper shift lever setting procedure.

Use correct procedure.

Double-disk opener not turning smoothly.

Loosen scrapers, adjust disks.

Seed caught in tubes.

Make sure tubes are properly installed.

Loose or swinging drawbar on tractor.

Lock tractor drawbar to prevent swinging.

Stopping machine in middle of field.

Stop only at ends of field whenever possible.

Lack of penetration.

Insufficient down-pressure.

Increase down-pressure.

Insufficient seed-bed preparation.

See individual opener for seedbed requirements.

Excessive field speed for field conditions.

Reduce ground speed.

Irregular grass seed distribution.

Seed tubes clogged with foreign objects.

Remove tubes and clean.

Varying quantities between individual feeds.

Distributing light chaffy seeds.

Mix seed with heavier seed or other material such as cracked corn to give it weight.

Quantities do not agree with seed chart.

Heavier or lighter than average weight seed.

Check quantities drilled. Check seed density.

Irregular drilling with fertilizer.

Drill improperly hitched.

Hitch machine properly.

Loose or swinging drawbar on tractor.

Lock tractor drawbar to prevent it from swinging.

Symptom Problem Solution

Clogging of tubes.

Boots clogged with dirt or fertilizer.

Do not stop or allow dirt to back up with furrow openers down.

Keep fertilizer dry.

Quantities drilled not agreeing with fertilizer chart.

Using wrong fertilizer drive.

Check drive for proper sprocket assembly.

Use proper gear case setting.

Quantity drilled has not been checked.

Check quantity drilled.

Improper tire inflation, tire size, or tread.

Inflate and inspect tires.

Fertilizer density other than 1041 kg/m 3 (5 lb/ft 3 ).

Set fertilizer rate for correct density.

Feed wheel installed improperly.

Install traction feeds properly.

Flow of fertilizer stops.

Broken shear pin.

Install new shear pin.

Fertilizer spills out of feeds.

Baffles installed incorrectly.

Install baffles.

Acremeter tallying incorrectly.

Improper tire inflation, tire size, or tread.

Inflate tires.

Double tracking, or leaving too wide a space between rows on each trip across field.

Drive carefully; leave same space between seeded strip as the furrow opener spacer on the machine.

Acremeter tallying incorrectly.

Plot of land contains more or less land than assumed.

Re-measure land.

Incorrect drive gear.

Check gear size.

Excessive spring force on press wheel.

Reduce spring force.

Symptom Problem Solution

Rear-mounted row markers.

Marker raises and lowers voluntarily.

Check your tractor hydraulic system. See your John Deere dealer.

Markers will not raise or lower.

Air lock in hydraulic hoses. Bleed hoses.

Hydraulic cylinder malfunction. Check hoses.

Marker drops when not selected (Electric marker control).
