Replace and Adjust Double-Disk Blades on Cast-Iron Boots
CAUTION:
Disk blades are sharp and may cut skin causing serious injury. Wear gloves and use locking pliers to hold blades when tightening or untightening.
1.
Remove bearing plug (A) from bearing case.
NOTE:
The left-hand disk has left-hand threads.
2.
Insert 5/16 in. hexagon wrench through hole in bearing case and remove disk blade. Carefully, inspect parts for wear or damage and replace with new parts when necessary.
It is recommended that rubber seals (D) be replaced with new ones at the end of each seeding season and lubricated as described in step 4.
NOTE:
The sealed bearing on this opener does not require lubrication.
3.
Proper assembly is important. Slip rubber seal (D) over boot hub so that flared open end of seal faces mating disk blade as illustrated. Be sure to press rubber seal down firmly to the shoulder on the hub.
4.
Fill cupped portion of rubber seal with rubber seal lubricant.
IMPORTANT:
Disk blades should "barely touch" at the closest point (E). Revolve disks to be certain disks turn freely with scrapers disengaged. If adjustment is necessary, add or deduct spacer washers (C) as required. Most new assemblies will require two washers on each bearing screw, while worn blades may require none.
5.
Install two spacer washers (C) on each bearing screw (F) and assemble disk blades to hub. Tighten firmly.
