Hydrostatic Drive

Symptom Problem Solution

Linkages binding.

Frozen or worn ball joints on linkage.

Lubricate or replace.

Linkage rods bent or interfering.

Adjust at ball joints or straighten.

Control shaft on pump binding.

(See your John Deere dealer).

System overheating. (Warning light comes on).

Air passages in cooler core plugged.

Clean cooler core.

Fan belt slipping or broken.

Check automatic belt tensioner or replace fan belt.

Rotary screen belt broken.

Replace belt.

Exceeding relief valve pressure.

Shift to lower gear.

Picker will not propel forward or reverse.

Hydrostatic oil not properly warmed up.

When operating in temperatures below -12°C (10°F), run-in picker 10-15 minutes to warm up hydrostatic drive oil.

No voltage to destroker valve on hydro.

Sit squarely on seat. Move hydro lever to Neutral and reset. (If still no voltage, see your John Deere dealer).

Transmission inoperative.

Check transmission and linkages or see your dealer.

Low on oil.

Check for leak and correct. Fill reservoir with oil.

Broken coupling from motor to transmission.

Repair as needed.

Air leak in system.

Tighten connections.

Defective U-joint from engine to pump.

Repair as needed.

Plugged oil filter.

Change filter element.

Exceeding relief valve pressure.

Shift to lower gear.

Symptom Problem Solution

Transmission hard to shift or will not shift.

Drive system unable to build up pressure.

(See your John Deere dealer).

Hydro lever not in neutral.

Move hydro lever to neutral or adjust hydro linkage.

Transmission shifter cam shaft corroded within transmission cover.

Remove, polish shaft with emory cloth, and re-install.

Ground travel speed erratic.

Hydraulic/Hydro reservoir low on oil.

Check for leaks and correct. Fill reservoir.

Plugged oil filter.

Change filter element.

Exceeding relief valve pressure.

Shift to lower gear.

Hydro lever creeps toward neutral.

Replace friction washers and/or springs as necessary.

Drive systems unable to maintain charge pressure.

(See your John Deere dealer).

Picker not responding to hydro lever.

Hydrostatic oil not properly warmed up.

When operating in temperatures below -12°C (10°F), run-in picker 10-15 minutes to warm up hydrostatic drive oil.

Operator presence system activated.

Bring hydro lever to neutral and try again.

Linkage loose or broken.

Check and repair as needed.

Plugged oil filter.

Change filter element.

Air in system.

Tighten connections, hose clamps, and check for broken hydraulic lines.

Hydraulic/Hydro reservoir low on oil.

Check for oil leaks and correct. Refill reservoir.
