Adjust Cotton Fan Belts And Guides Annually

 

causym CAUTION: Shut off engine, engage park brake switch and remove key BEFORE making fan belt adjustments.

IMPORTANT: Belt damage can occur. Correct belt tension and proper belt guide adjustment MUST be maintained to avoid premature wear.

1. Turn key "off" and remove from switch.

2. Verify fan belt (A) deflection measures to specifications, using SERVICEGARD ™ belt tension gauge (B) (JDG950) or equivalent. If deflection is correct proceed to step 8.

Specification

Fan Belt -Deflection At Mid Span Of Belt 12.7 mm (0.5 in.)
-Force 89-133 kg (20-30 lb)

3. Remove idler sheave jam nut (C).

4. Loosen idler sheave nut (D) and jam nut (E).

5. Loosen or tighten belt as required using adjustment nut (F).

6. Tighten idler sheave nut (D) to specification.

Specification

Idler Sheave Nut -Torque 163 N·m (120 lb-ft)

7. Tighten jam nut (E).

8. Install and tighten idler sheave jam nut (C) to specification.

Specification

Idler Sheave Jam Nut -Torque 27 N·m (20 lb-ft)

9. Check for correct belt tension.

10. Repeat process if necessary to achieve correct belt tension.

11. Adjust space between belt and guide (G) to specification.

Specification

Space Between Belt And Guide -Distance 6.35 mm (0.25 in.)
