Using Machine with Hydraulic Wing Control Option

Optional hydraulic wing control valve (A) uses tractor hydraulic pressure and wing fold cylinders to adjust cutting force of wings.

IMPORTANT: Hydraulic wing control is compatible only with tractors with closed center hydraulic systems or John Deere Pressure/Flow Compensating System. Damage could occur due to heat build-up if used with tractor equipped with open center hydraulic system.

Never operate machine in unfolded position with tractor SCV lever/switch in NEUTRAL position. (Dial gauge (B) will not indicate "neutral" position.)

Always place SCV lever/switch in either FLOAT or DETENT when machine is in unfolded position. Failure to position lever correctly could result in damage to wing-fold cylinders or frame.

When machine is in FOLDED position, be sure to attach wings by placing SCV lever/switch in neutral position.

A special rod end clevis is used on machines equipped with Hydraulic Wing Control. This clevis is pinned solid to wing frames and is identifiable by a grease fitting (C). NEVER operate tractor SCV lever/switch in "neutral" as this holds wing frame rigid and may result in cylinder rod damage.

FLOAT position turns off Hydraulic Wing Control and allows wings to flex and follow uneven ground conditions.

Machines not equipped with Hydraulic Wing Control use a slotted clevis (E) which does NOT have a grease fitting. This type clevis allows wings to flex and follow uneven ground conditions regardless of tractor SCV lever/switch position.

1. Open wing fold lock-up valve (D).

2. To engage Hydraulic Wing Fold Control, place SCV lever/switch in "forward detent" position. Hydraulic flow for wing fold cylinders is now controlled by hydraulic wing control valve.

NOTE: (See SETTING TRACTOR SCV LEVER/SWITCHES FOR HYDRAULIC WING CONTROL OPTION in this section.)

Wing gauge wheels must be adjusted so wing frame is level with main frame when viewed from rear of machine. Hydraulic Wing Control is NOT intended to make up for mechanical mis-adjustment of wing frames. (See ADJUST LEVELING WING FRAME TO MAIN FRAME in this section.)

3. Turn control valve knob (A) in one-half turn increments until desired wing depth is achieved.

Turn knob (A) COUNTERCLOCKWISE to INCREASE wing penetration. Dial gauge indicates PUSH WING (D).

Turn knob (A) CLOCKWISE to DECREASE wing penetration. Dial gauge indicates PULL WING (E).

4. Attach control valve at desired setting by tightening lock nut (B).

5. To disengage hydraulic wing control, push tractor control lever forward to FLOAT position.

IMPORTANT: To prevent machine damage, do not operate unfolded with fold cylinder operating lever in "neutral" position.

6. Operate machine as described in PREPARING TO OPERATE IN FIELD in this section If machine is performing satisfactorily and cutting depth is uniform, leave switch in FLOAT position and continue disking.

7. Periodically, as soil conditions change, monitor wing disking depth and adjust control valve (A) as desired. Attach control valve at desired setting by tightening lock nut (B).

IMPORTANT: If tractor hydraulic system has heat build-up or if wing control system fails to operate with tractor control lever locked in unfold position, there may be an "oil bypass condition" in tractor.

To verify bypass condition, listen for engine "pull down" and oil noise "hiss" at tractor control lever.

Tractor control valve oil bypass problem may be corrected by readjustment of tractor control lever linkage. (See your John Deere dealer if necessary.)

NOTE: Hydraulic wing control system can be turned off "on go" by securing wing fold cylinder tractor control lever in FLOAT position. Dial gauge needle will register in section labeled FLOAT.
