Field Problems

Problem Possible Remedy
MACHINE WILL NOT PENETRATE Check blades for sharpness.
  Re-level machine front-to-rear and side-to-side.
NOSEDIVING Raise machine to transport height and level with turnbuckle. Lower machine, turn leveling crank clockwise (raises front gangs).
RIDGING ON OUTSIDE

NXH8,M63755,ZO1 -19-20JUL98-1/6

A19400

Reduce speed of operation to between 6.4-9.7 km/h (4-6 mph).
Rigid Machine-Move gangs to SECONDARY position.
Raise machine to transport position and level front-to-rear with turnbuckle. Lower machine, turn leveling crank clockwise (raises front gangs).
Re-level wing frames to main frame when viewed from rear.
If front leveling spring compressed, move turnbuckle to rear hole on pivot link.
Tractor drawbar too low, should be 406-508 mm (16-20 in.) from ground. Re-level machine if raised.
  Add rear finishing blade attachment.
  Add stabilizer wheels.
MACHINE WILL NOT RAISE OR LOWER. Open hydraulic cylinder transport lock-up valve.
  Check hydraulic hook-up to tractor.
SINGLE POINT DEPTH CONTROL STOP INCONSISTENT/MALFUNCTIONS Single Point Depth Control tube/bracket not assembled correctly.

RIDGING IN CENTER Reduce speed of operation to between 6.4-9.7 km/h (4-6 mph).
Rigid Machine-Move gangs to SECONDARY position.
Raise machine to transport position and level with turnbuckle. Lower machine and turn leveling crank counterclockwise to raise front gangs and lower rear gangs.
If front leveling spring compressed move turnbuckle to rear hole on pivot link.
Middlebreaker is too low. Reset middlebreaker blade to run even with blades.
Confirm middlebreaker blade is 152 mm (6 in.) smaller in diameter than main frame blades.
MACHINE RUNS DEEPER ON ONE SIDE WHEN OPERATING IN FIELD Twisted rockshaft. Replace rockshaft. See John Deere dealer.
Disk or mainframe timing tube is not level side-to-side within 7 mm (1/4 in.). Check wheel modules from bottom edge of frame to axle spindle. Both measurements should be within 7 mm (1/4 in.). See LEVELING MAIN FRAME-SIDE-TO-SIDE.

VALLEY ON CENTER (A) AND OUTSIDE (B) AND/OR RIDGE (C) Reduce speed of operation to between 6.4-9.7 km/h (4-6 mph).
Rigid Machine-Move gangs to PRIMARY position.
  Re-level machine front-to-rear and side-to-side.
Check wing frame shim setting-add or remove shims per Shim Chart in Section 20.
  Add finishing blade attachment.

UNCUT CENTER BULK (A)
FRONT GANGS ONLY (B-CORRECT)
Check middlebreaker adjustment. Replace middlebreaker blade.
Check bearing standard location. (See Service section.)
FRONT GANGS GOUGE/CUT TOO DEEP Rigid Machine-Move gangs to SECONDARY position.
Turn leveling crank clockwise to raise front gangs and lower rear gangs.
  Re-level machine front-to-rear and side-to-side.
Lower depth gauge wheels to support wing frames and stabilize wings.
Check wing frame shim setting-remove shims.
  Install front stabilizer wheels.
Install Hydraulic Wing Control. (In tough, hard ground conditions.)
WING GANGS WILL NOT PENETRATE/CUT TOO SHALLOW Turn leveling crank counterclockwise to lower front gangs and raise rear gangs.
Re-level machine front to rear and side-to-side.
Lower depth gauge wheels to support wing frames and stabilize wings.
Check wing frame shim setting-add shims.
  Add front stabilizer wheels.
Install Hydraulic Wing Control. (In tough, hard ground conditions.
WINGS DO NOT FLEX
(Hydraulic Wing Control Machine only)
Tractor SCV lever/switch in "neutral"
Place tractor SCV lever/switch in FLOAT to disengage hydraulic wing control or forward detent to engage hydraulic wing control.

WINGS CUT TOO SHALLOW
(Hydraulic Wing Control only)
Tractor SCV lever/switch in "neutral". (Operating hydraulic wing control with SCV lever/switch in "neutral" position may result in wing fold cylinder rod damage.)
Too little hydraulic down pressure. Adjust knob to increase PUSH WING pressure on gauge.
Tractor SCV lever/switch is in false detent. To verify, listen for engine "pulldown" and oil "hiss" noise at tractor control lever. (See your John Deere dealer.)
Wing fold cylinder rod length dimensions not correct. (See your John Deere dealer.)
WINGS CUT TOO DEEP
WINGS DO NOT UNFOLD Open wing fold transport lock-up valve.
(Hydraulic Wing Control Option Only)
Move SCV lever/switch back and forth.
Check hydraulic line to tractor breakaway coupler connection.
  (See your John Deere dealer.)
TRACTOR OIL OVERHEATS
(Hydraulic Wing Control only)
Hydraulic Wing Control is compatible only with tractors with closed center hydraulic systems or John Deere Pressure/Flow Compensated Systems.
Check tractor SCV for proper operation.
(See your John Deere Dealer)
Check wing fold hydraulic cylinder piston seals for leakage. Replace seals if necessary.
