Draining, Flushing and Refilling Cooling System-Every 5000 Hours or Five Years

1. Raise hood.

causym CAUTION: Explosive release of fluids from pressurized cooling system can cause serious burns.

Shut off engine. Only remove cap when cool enough to touch with bare hands. Slowly loosen cap to first stop to relieve pressure before removing completely.

IMPORTANT: Avoid cooling system damage. Test or replace thermostats and de-airation tank cap. See your John Deere dealer.

2. Slowly turn de-airation tank cap (A) to relieve pressure. Remove cap.

3. Open radiator drain cock (B).

4. Remove three cap screws, housing (C), seal and thermostats.

5. Install housing and seal without thermostats. Tighten cap screws to specifications.

Specification

Thermostat Housing Cap Screws -Torque 48 N·m (35 lb-ft)

NOTE: Operate cab heater during entire procedure.

6. Close drain cock and fill system with a cooling system cleaning solution. Install de-airation tank cap and operate engine up to operating temperature. Stop engine and drain system.

IMPORTANT: Never pour cold water or coolant into hot engine.

7. Repeat Step 6 using clean water.

8. Remove thermostat housing and clean sealing area. Test thermostats and radiator cap. (See Test or Replace Thermostats and Radiator Cap-Every 5000 Hours or Five Years in this section.)

9. Install thermostats, seal and housing. Tighten cap screws to specifications.

Thermostat Housing Cap Screws -Torque 48 N·m (35 lb-ft)

10. Close drain cock. Fill system with coolant as specified in Fuel, Lubricants and Coolant section. Operate engine and check coolant level in expansion tank.

11. Lower hood.
