Troubleshooting-Hydraulic Down Pressure on Tractors with Open Center Hydraulics Using Attachment for Field Conversion

Symptom Problem Solution

Pressure gauge shows zero when openers are down.

SCV lever in float position.

Put SCV lever in neutral position.

SCV lever not held forward long enough to charge down pressure system.

When lowering openers, hold SCV lever forward long enough for down pressure system to reach pre-set pressure as shown by pressure gauge.

Openers not maintaining proper ground contact.

SCV lever not held forward long enough to charge down pressure system.

When lowering openers, hold SCV lever forward long enough for down pressure system to reach pre-set pressure as shown by pressure gauge.

Slow internal hydraulic leakage. (Normal with all hydraulic systems.)

Hold SCV lever forward long enough for down pressure system to reach pre-set pressure as shown by pressure gauge.

More hydraulic pressure required to compress opener springs.

Increase pre-set hydraulic pressure.

Pre-set pressure does not lower when turning valve knob counterclockwise.

Open center attachment traps oil in system until openers are raised.

Raise and lower openers to pre-set to lower pressure.

Pressure valve sticks.

Disassemble valve and clean.

Pre-set pressure does not rise when turning valve knob clockwise.

No pressure to adjusting valve.

Hold SCV #1 in forward position for a few seconds.

Hose couplers not connected properly to tractor.

Ensure that hose couplers are connected to proper SCV and locked.

Symptom Problem Solution

Plugs in valve block leak.

Valve block equipped with non-standard plugs and o-ring.

Replace non-standard 7/16 in. plug with standard 7/16 in. plug and o-ring.

Replace non-standard 5/16 in. plug with standard 5/16 in. plug with no o-ring.

System fails to build pressure or builds to maximum pressure.

Contamination in spool valve and/or orifice.

Remove spool valve from valve body and work spool back and forth with dowel rod while flushing with mineral spirits. Replace spool valve.

System builds to maximum pressure and cannot be adjusted lower.

Contamination in V2 ball check assembly.

Remove V2 port and ball check assembly. Clean ball check assembly thoroughly in mineral spirits and reassemble.

Openers drift down after being raised.

Contamination in V1 ball check assembly or piston seal in hydraulic cylinder leaking.

Remove V1 ball check assembly, clean with mineral spirits and replace. If openers continue to drift down, close transport valve and disconnect hydraulic hoses from tractor. If openers still continue to drift down, replace piston seal in cylinder.
