Preparing Engine for Storage

causym CAUTION: Gasoline is highly flammable and can cause serious injury or death to you or others if ignited. Do not use gasoline as a cleaning agent when preparing engine for storage.

1. Wash outside of engine thoroughly with a safe solvent.

2. Clean or replace the air cleaner. (See REMOVING AND REPLACING AIR CLEANER ELEMENTS in Engine and Drive Train section.)

3. Drain crankcase with engine warm. Replace filter and fill crankcase. (See EVERY 250 HOURS OF OPERATION in Lubrication and Maintenance section.)

IMPORTANT: DO NOT drain cooling system to protect against freezing. Cab heater does not drain completely, so damage would result.

4. Drain, flush, and refill cooling system with proper coolant. (See FLUSHING COOLING SYSTEM and in Engine and Drive Train section.) Turn heater on and run engine until it reaches operating temperature.

5. Open drain plug (A) and drain fuel tank (B).

6. Reinstall plug (A) and add 38 L (10 gal) of diesel fuel with 414 mL (14 oz) of corrosion inhibitor. Start engine and run at fast throttle for 15-20 minutes. Allow engine to cool for 15-20 minutes

7. Add 296 mL (10 oz) of corrosion inhibitor to crankcase.

8. Remove starting aid line from air intake system. Pour 0.1 L (3 oz) of inhibitor into intake system and replace line. Crank engine ONLY a few revolutions.

9. Remove batteries (negative cable first) and store them in a dry, cool place. Charge batteries every 30 days if necessary.

10. Clean cooling cores (A-E).

11. Seal the following openings with tape and/or plastic bags to prevent loss of corrosion inhibiting vapors.

  • Exhaust pipe
  • Air cleaner pre-cleaner
  • Engine dipstick and tube
  • Crankcase breather tube
