A - Filler Cap B - Connect/Disconnect Control (front of radiator) C - Drain Plug (rear of radiator) D - Intercooler Hose E - Lines
CAUTION: Do not open cap (A) of expansion tank before coolant temperature is below boiling point. First loosen the cap to relieve pressure, then remove cap completely.
NOTE: The FIRST service interval is 6 years or 6000 hours, provided the cooling system has been filled exclusively with John Deere COOL-GARD II and the coolant has been checked at the prescribed intervals. After the first service, the REGULAR interval (6 years or 6000 hours) is reduced to 2 years or 2000 hours if a coolant other than COOL-GARD II, COOL-GARD, or COOL-GARD PG is used. Comply with the recommended engine coolant service intervals in Diesel Engine Coolant in the Fuel, Lubricants, Hydraulic Oil and Coolant section of this manual. Turn the heater control to maximum heating. First loosen cap (A) and then take it off. Turn connect/disconnect control (B) counterclockwise as far as it will go. Place a container under the drains to trap the coolant as it emerges. Open drain plug (C).
NOTE: See your John Deere dealer for recommendations on cleaning solutions that can be used as alternatives to flushing system with clean water. As soon as system is empty, close radiator drain plug (C) and fill the system with clean water. IMPORTANT: Never pour cold water or coolant into the hot engine. Always use warm water or wait until engine has cooled down. Run the engine at idle speed and squeeze hose (D) gently with your fingers to determine whether the pump is pumping coolant. If no pressure can be felt, shut off the engine. Loosen lines (E) until coolant/water emerges from lines (E). Retighten lines (E). Run the engine at idle speed and once again check the pressure at hose (D). If necessary, loosen line (D) at charge air cooler. Once coolant emerges or pressure felt retighten line. Run engine until it has reached operating temperature. Shut off engine and drain system again. Close drain plug again and fill the system with clean water. Verify pressure in line (D) and repeat steps to ensure coolant flow. Run engine until it has reached operating temperature. Shut off engine and drain system again. NOTE: The cooling system uses two coolant circuits that are almost completely separated. This means that the coolant is not mixed during operation. Therefore only prediluted coolant should be used in the cooling system. Close drain plug. Add the prescribed coolant (see Fuel, Lubricants, Hydraulic Oil and Coolant section) to the system until coolant is level with the max. mark on expansion tank. Verify pressure in line (D) and repeat steps to ensure coolant flow. Add coolant up to the max. mark on expansion tank. Start the engine and run it for 5 minutes. Shut down the engine and add coolant up to the max. mark on expansion tank. Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature. Shut down the engine and add coolant up to the max. mark on expansion tank. Turn connect/disconnect control (B) clockwise as far as it will go. Re-install and close the filler cap (A). For efficient cooling, the radiator screen must be kept clean. Remove any dust or oil and carefully straighten any bent fins. COOL-GARD is a trademark of Deere & Company
