Inspecting Fan Belt Tensioner

1. Raise Hood.

2. Remove cap screw (A and C) and cap screw and nut (B), lift left-hand engine side shield (D) off of alignment studs.

3. Release tension on belt using a 13 mm (1/2 in.) breaker bar (E).

4. Remove belt from alternator pulley.

5. Release tension on tension arm and remove breaker bar.

6. Measure 21 mm (13/16 in.) from (B) and put a mark (C) on mounting bracket.

7. Rotate tension arm with torque wrench (A) until marks (B and C) align. If torque wrench measurement is not within specification, replace tensioner mechanism. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Specification

Tension Arm -Torque 18-23 N·m (159-204 lb-in.)

8. Install belt and side shield.

9. Lower hood.
