Discarded Tires

It is illegal to burn discarded tires. Tires cannot be used to start piles of trees and buildings on fire. Tires cannot be used to fill ravines, washes, streams, etc.

Discarded tires can be disposed of in a permitted landfill. These tires must first be processed (shredded or quartered) before being taken to a landfill. Call your landfill for requirements.

Discarded tires also may be recycled if a recycling plant is nearby.

Tires may sometimes be used for stream bank stabilization—contact DNR or your local natural resources agency for guidance.
