Moistener System Operation

A - Spindle

B - Moistener Column

The moistener system supplies a solution of water and spindle cleaner to clean the picking unit spindles (A). The spindles are cleaned by contact with pads on the moistener column (B) and the flow of solution through the pads and onto the spindles.

A flushing feature is provided to send a larger amount of solution to each moistener pad to assist in cleaning spindles when needed. The flush feature is actuated by the operator as required. (See USING MOISTENER FLUSH SYSTEM in this section.)

IMPORTANT: Proper spindle cleaning is accomplished by the moistener system, NOT by the doffers. Improper operation of the moistener system or failure to use the flush feature when needed results in excessive wear and damage to doffers and spindles.

Proper spindle cleaning results from the following:

  • proper mixture of water and spindle cleaner or wetting agent.
  • correct nozzle size for type of solution additive.
  • adequate solution pressure.
  • proper adjustment of moistener column.
  • periodic use of moistener flush system.
