Filling Cooling System

IMPORTANT: Follow this procedure if coolant system has been drained and flushed.

DO NOT use methoxyl propanol antifreeze in the cooling system. It can damage cylinder sleeves and seals.

Stop-leak additives can plug radiator, causing overheating and engine damage. Do not use coolants that contain a stop-leak additive.

    A - Surge Tank Cap

Remove surge tank cap (A) and fill system with coolant to MAX COLD mark on surge tank. (See HEAVY DUTY DIESEL ENGINE COOLANT in Fuels, Lubricants, and Coolants section for proper coolant. See MACHINE SPECIFICATIONS—CAPACITIES for cooling system capacity.)

  2. Install surge tank cap.

  3. Start engine and operate at slow idle until thermostat opens and system reaches normal operating temperature.

  4. Set cab temperature control knob to maximum heat. Continue running engine for approximately 5 minutes to circulate coolant through entire system and mix solution uniformly.

  5. Shut off engine and allow system to cool for 15—20 minutes.

  6. NOTE: Coolant level in surge tank goes down as air is removed from cooling system. When coolant is hot, level is higher than when coolant is cold.

Check coolant level in surge tank. Level must be between MIN COLD and MAX COLD marks. Add coolant as necessary.
