Removing and Installing Batteries

  1. CAUTION: BATTERIES ARE NEGATIVE GROUNDED ONLY. Always remove grounded (—) battery clamp first and replace it last. Always connect battery ground strap to negative (-) posts of battery. Connect starter cable to positive (+) post of battery. Reversed polarity in battery or alternator connections results in permanent damage to electrical system.

    IMPORTANT: Replacement batteries must have same terminal locations.

    A - Negative (—) Cable (3 used)

    B - Positive (+) Cable (3 used)

    C - Shield

    D - Battery Retaining Bracket

    Disconnect negative (—) cables (A) from battery terminals.



  2. Disconnect positive (+) cables (B) from battery terminals.

  3. Remove shield (C).

  4. Remove battery retaining bracket (D).

  5. Remove batteries from machine.

  6. Clean clamps on battery cables.

  7. Install batteries in machine and install retaining bracket.

  8. Install shield.

  9. Make sure that all switches and accessories are turned off.

  10. Quickly tap ground clamp on cable to negative post on battery and watch for arcing. If arcing occurs, do not make connection. Instead, check the following:

    • Check to see if battery position is reversed
    • Check again that all switches and accessories are off
    • Check for shorts or other electrical loads

  11. Connect positive battery cables to positive terminals on batteries. Tighten cable clamps.

  12. Connect negative battery cables to negative terminals on batteries. Tighten cable clamps.
