A - Engine Oil Dipstick
IMPORTANT: Do Not operate engine when oil level is below “ADD”
mark on dipstick.
NOTE: A tag is located on the dipstick tube to alert the operator
of the break-in oil. After break-in has been completed, discard tag.
The engine in this machine was filled at the factory with John
Deere Break-In Plus Engine Oil and is ready for normal operation. However,
extra care during the first 375 hours of operation will result in
more satisfactory long-term engine performance and life.
During the first 20 hours of operation, operate the engine under
various conditions, particularly heavy loads with minimal idling,
to help seat engine components properly. Avoid prolonged periods of
engine idling or sustained maximum load operation. If engine is going
to idle longer than 5 minutes, stop engine.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT add makeup oil unless oil level is BELOW the
ADD mark on dipstick. John Deere Break-In Plus must be used to
make up any oil consumed during the break-in period. (See JOHN DEERE
BREAK-IN PLUS ENGINE OIL in Fuels, Lubricants, and Coolants section.) DO NOT use Plus-50 or Plus-50 II Engine Oil during break-in period. These oils will not allow
engine to wear properly during this break-in period.
DO NOT fill above the FULL mark. Oil levels anywhere within
the crosshatch marks are considered in the acceptable operating range.
NOTE: Some increase in oil consumption can be expected when
low viscosity oils are used. Check oil levels more frequently. Verify that dipstick is completely in housing before removing
to check oil level.
Remove dipstick (A) and check oil level daily. Oil level must
be between ADD mark and top of crosshatch area on dipstick. If oil
level is below ADD mark, add oil as needed.
After the first 375 hours maximum, change engine oil and replace
engine oil filter. Fill crankcase with John Deere Plus-50 II or other diesel
engine oil. (See DIESEL ENGINE OIL in Fuels, Lubricants, and Coolants
section for proper oil.)

A - Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge
B - Coolant Surge Tank
Watch engine coolant temperature gauge (A) closely. If needle
on gauge rises into warning zone and caution indicator light comes
on, engine is overheating. Shift to lower gear or reduce load by reducing
ground speed. Unless temperature drops quickly, STOP engine. Determine
cause of overheating.
CAUTION: The explosive release of fluids from pressurized cooling
system can cause burns resulting in serious injury or death to you
or others. Do not remove surge tank cap until it is cool enough to
touch with bare hands. Shut off engine and wait until it cools. Then
slowly loosen cap to relieve pressure before removing it completely.
Check coolant level in surge tank (B) frequently during break-in
period, when engine is cold. Watch for any signs of leaks. Coolant
level must remain between maximum and minimum cold level marked on
tank.
