Replacing Picker Bars

  1. Remove M10 hardware (B) and picker bar access cover (A).

  2. Rotate drum manually (with a wrench on upper hex shaft of doffer) until picker bar is at opening.

  3. IMPORTANT: Picker bar damage can occur. Front and rear square spring washers MUST be reinstalled to the same drum from which they were removed.

    Remove drum head bolts and square spring washer (C) from both sides of picker bar journal.

    B - Plastic Grease Seal

    Remove two pivot stud screws (A).



  5. NOTE: Care must be taken so the plastic grease seal (B) is not misplaced upon picker bar removal.

    Lift picker bar out of unit, bottom end first.

  6. IMPORTANT: Spindle drive gear damage can occur. New picker bar must be completely assembled and run-in by your John Deere dealer.

    When installing picker bar assembly do the following:

    1. Verify plastic grease seal is securely positioned in picker bar journal or drumhead.

    2. Verify roller chamfer is up.

      NOTE: If all bars have been removed from drum, reinstall all bars loosely, then tighten hardware.

    3. Tighten pivot stud screws to specifications.

      B - Square Spring Washer

      Install square spring washers (B) with drum head bolts (A). Tighten drum head bolts to specification.

      NOTE: If doffing problems are encountered or if picker bar will not move up and down slightly, picker bar may need to be planed. (See your John Deere dealer.)

    5. Lubricate picker bar. (See PICKER BAR AND SPINDLE LUBRICANTS in Lubrication and Maintenance section.)
