CAUTION: DEF contains urea. Do not get the substance in eyes. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with large amounts of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Do not take internally. In event DEF is ingested, contact a physician immediately. Reference Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for additional information.

IMPORTANT: It is unlawful to tamper with or remove any component of the aftertreatment system. It is also unlawful to use DEF that does not meet the specifications provided or to operate the vehicle with no DEF.

Using incorrect or unapproved aftertreatment components can cause damage to vehicle’s aftertreatment system and reduce ability of aftertreatment system to function correctly. Never interchange aftertreatment components between Interim Tier 4/Stage III B and Final Tier 4/Stage IV equipped vehicles.

NOTE: Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system monitors quality of DEF flowing through it. If a fluid other than DEF at correct urea concentration is detected, system will display a diagnostic trouble code.

The following DEF is preferred:

  • John Deere Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Other diesel exhaust fluids:

IMPORTANT: Never attempt to create DEF by mixing agricultural grade urea with water. Agricultural grade urea does not meet necessary specifications required and vehicle aftertreatment system may be damaged.

Do not add any chemicals/additives to DEF in an effort to prevent freezing. Any chemicals/additives added to DEF may damage aftertreatment system.

Never add water or any other fluid in place of - or in addition to - approved DEF to DEF tank. Operating with a modified DEF or using any replacement for approved DEF may damage aftertreatment system.

John Deere Diesel Exhaust Fluid might not be available in the geographical area where service is performed.

If the preferred DEF is not available use only DEF meeting requirements for Aqueous Urea Solution 32 (AUS32) as specified in ISO 22241-1 or DIN 70070 standards.

Alternate names for DEF include:

  • Urea
  • AdBlue®
  • Catalyst Solution
  • Aqueous Urea Solution 32 (AUS 32)
  • NOx Reduction Agent

When purchasing DEF, always check container date code to be sure DEF is as fresh as possible.

For vehicles operated in the United States and Canada, it is strongly recommended that any DEF used be certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API®). Vehicles operated in the European Union should use DEF certified by AdBlue® Diesel Exhaust Certification Program. Symbols mark containers holding an approved DEF.

John Deere is not responsible for failures or damage resulting from what is determined by the company to be abuse or neglect, including but not limited to:

  • Operation without correctly specified DEF
  • Lack of aftertreatment system maintenance
  • Improper shutdown or storage procedures
  • Unauthorized modifications of engine and/or aftertreatment system
  • Use of incorrect DEF
  • Presence of water, dirt or other contaminants in DEF
