Anhydrous Ammonia Tank

Before unhooking nurse tank from applicator or transporting machine, high pressure anhydrous ammonia MUST BE BLED from the nurse tank hose. Operating applicator in field with nurse tank valve closed and distribution system on removes the majority of high pressure anhydrous ammonia. After system is bled in this manner remaining shutoff valves MUST BE CLOSED AND BLEED VALVES OPENED.

  1. CAUTION: Read all information in Safety section before working with anhydrous ammonia systems and always wear protective clothing and equipment. Exposure to anhydrous ammonia can cause injury or death to you or others. (See WORKING WITH ANHYDROUS AMMONIA in safety section.)

CAUTION: WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT AND PROCEED WITH CAUTION EVEN AFTER BLEEDING SYSTEM. Cold spots can occur in hoses and fittings allowing anhydrous ammonia to remain in the system. Cold spots may not always have a visible frost line on hoses or fittings. Disassembly of fittings and hoses can cause the release of liquid and vapor anhydrous ammonia from cold spots causing severe injury or death to you or others. Keep hose openings and bleed valve ports turned away from your body and bystanders at all times. Verify all lines are bled completely.

CAUTION: Complete system bleeding can take a considerable amount of time depending on air temperature and volume of anhydrous ammonia in lines. Always verify system is completely bled before transporting or servicing.

Position tank and machine down wind from where you are standing.

  2. Close tank withdrawal valve.

  3. Lower machine into ground, turn ON master switch of controller (See manufacturer's operation manual), and make one field pass.

  4. Turn OFF application system. (See manufacturer's operation manual.)

  5. Bleed off remaining anhydrous ammonia in system by opening bleeder valves (A) in supply hose, emergency disconnect and applicator. Wait until anhydrous ammonia vapor has COMPLETELY dispersed.

CAUTION: Liquid anhydrous ammonia may still be present in hose. Point bleed valve outlet away from body and towards ground as bleeder valve is opened to avoid contact with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Exposure to anhydrous ammonia can cause serious injury or death to you or others.

CAUTION: Never hold supply hose by valve handle. Carrying supply hose by valve handle can lead to exposure to anhydrous ammonia and cause serious injury or death to you or others. Never hold supply hose by valve handle.

  6. BLEED MODIFIED CONTROLLED FLOW EQUIPMENT—If Equipped

Some anhydrous ammonia applicators are equipped with sectional valves to control flow to specific machine sections. Each section MUST BE BLED in proper order to individual soil injectors before servicing any part of the machine. See original equipment manufacturer's instructions on bleeding modified controlled flow equipment.

  7. Shut off anhydrous ammonia FIRST at tank withdrawal valve.

  8. Open individual knife or section valves farthest downwind on machine.

  9. Open second closest section-control valves downwind to machine center.

  10. Open main flow valve last.
