Operating the Differential Chopper
The differential chopper system was designed not only to extend blade life, but to improve and maintain billet quality. A close study of the picture at right, shows how the action of the blades resembles scissors.

Maintain chopper system in good condition at all times.

The extractors can separate leaf debris much better if the blades are timed correctly. The leaves, as well as the cane, are cleanly cut by sharp blades when synchronized correctly. Blades need to have full blade contact, but not gouge or hit hard. Make daily checks and adjust if necessary.

Blunt edges and badly synchronized choppers cause "sausages" (incomplete cuts) and may result in reduced container weights. Some of these "sausages" will turn with the elevator slats and dangle from the elevator cart guard. The operator will know that blades need to be changed if he sees this happen.
