Changing Engine Oil and Replacing Filter

NOTE: Change engine oil and filter for the first time before 100 hours maximum of operation, then every 250 hours thereafter.

If John Deere PLUS-50 engine oil and a John Deere oil filter are used, the oil and filter change interval may be extended by 50 percent or to 375 hours.

OILSCAN is a John Deere sampling program to help you monitor machine performance and identify potential problems before they cause serious damage. OILSCAN kits are available from your John Deere dealer.

Oil samples should be taken prior to the oil change. Refer to instructions provided with kit.

1. Run engine approximately 5 minutes to warm up oil. Shut off engine.

2. The engine oil drain hose (A) is mounted on the outside underneath the engine compartment adjacent to the pump drive drain hose.

3. Remove plug from hose end. Secure hose inside an appropriate container.

4. Open petcock at engine oil pan and allow oil to drain into container. Venting by removing filler cap will cut drain time. Dispose of waste oil according to all employer and government environmental guidelines.

5. Use a wrench to unscrew oil filter cap. Wait 30 seconds to allow oil filter housing to drain. Filter is removed with cap as an assembly.

IMPORTANT: Filtration of oils is critical to proper operation and lubrication. Always change filter regularly. Use filter meeting John Deere performance specifications.

6. While holding on to screw cap, strike filter element against a solid surface to disconnect filter from cap. Discard used filter.

7. Remove O-ring seal and replace with new O-ring provided with new filter element.

8. Press new filter into cap until it snaps into place.

9. Use a towel to wipe clean the inside of the filter housing.

10. Insert cap and filter assembly into oil filter housing. Screw cap in place.

11. Use wrench to lightly tighten cap to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

12. Fill engine crankcase with correct John Deere engine oil through oil filler tube located on the left side of the machine.

NOTE: Crankcase oil capacity may vary slightly. ALWAYS fill crankcase to full mark or within crosshatch on dipstick, whichever is present. DO NOT overfill.

IMPORTANT: Immediately after completing any oil change, crank engine for 30 seconds without permitting engine to start. This will help insure adequate lubrication to engine components before engine starts.

13. After start-up, check low oil pressure indicator light and check filter for possible leaks.

14. Stop engine and check oil level after 10 minutes. Oil level reading should be within crosshatch or at the upper mark of the dipstick.
