Operating Topping System

1. Always use the topper, even on downed cane. The topper can still remove a certain percentage of tops to aid the cleaning process.
2. Always cut the tops at the point where the lowest leaf ends, as shown. Cutting here gives the severed top enough weight to be thrown clear.
3. Since crop height varies, as shown on right, the operator must raise or lower the topper as necessary. Pay particular attention to the row ends, since the cane here is usually shorter and thinner.
4. Tops should be thrown clear, as shown. If not, they will enter the machine and affect the cleaning process in a negative way. Some causes of this are loose blade bolts, missing blades, or when topper height is too high.
