Adding Liquid Ballast to Tires

To fill a tire, jack up the wheel and turn it so that the tire valve is at the top. Replace the air valve with a liquid ballast valve. As the tire is filled, air will escape through the vent tube. Stop filling the tire when water escapes through the valve vent opening. Depending on tire size, filling will take 15 to 30 minutes. Next, replace the liquid ballast valve with the air valve and inflate the tire to the normal inflation pressure. Capacities depend on tire size and brand. If necessary, consult your John Deere dealer or tire manufacturer.

In cold weather (risk of freezing) antifreeze should be used. Tire manufacturers recommend a mixture of water and calcium chloride.

The tire can be filled with antifreeze by placing the container in an elevated location. A pump will fill the tire more quickly (the pump must then be flushed with clean water). To provide protection down to -25°C (-13°F), dissolve 34 kg (75 lb) of calcium chloride in 86 liters (22.7 U.S. gal.) of water to obtain 100 liters (26.4 U.S. gal.) of antifreeze solution. This solution produces an increase in weight of 120 kg (269 lb). Add calcium chloride to the water - not vice versa. This antifreeze solution must not be used in the engine radiator.
