Check Driveline Shields

CAUTION:

Avoid bodily injury or death from entanglement in rotating drivelines, replace any missing or damaged shielding. Never operate machine without shielding.

Check that driveline shields rotate freely. Lubricate or replace if necessary. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Check Hitch Pin Torque

A - Hitch Pin

1. Periodically check the torque of hitch pin lock nut on each mast.

2. Tighten to specification.

How to Free a Seized Slip Clutch

A - PTO Shield

B - Quick Lock Pin (1 each side)

• Disengage PTO.
• Engage parking brake and place transmission in PARK.
• Shut off tractor engine and remove key.

IMPORTANT: Friction type clutches can seize if left unused for a time, especially in humid or damp conditions. Slip the clutch using the following procedure.

Perform the following steps with the cutter attached to tractor. (See attach procedure in Attach and Detach section.)

1. Remove two quick lock pins (B) and raise PTO shield (A).

   Avoid driveline damage, DO NOT overtighten cap screws and lock nuts. A gap must be left between clutch plate and belleville springs.

   Tighten four M8 nuts (A) to remove pressure from clutch disks.

3. Place chalk marks (B) across backup plate and hub.

4. Start tractor engine and run at low rpm. Check clutch slippage:

   1. Engage PTO for 2—3 seconds to allow clutch to slip.

   2. Disengage the PTO.

   3. Repeat Steps a and b at least three times.

   4. Disengage PTO, shut off tractor engine, remove key, and allow components to stop rotating.

      Check alignment of chalk marks:

      If marks are still aligned, clutch DID NOT slip: Disassemble and inspect for wear or damage. (See DISASSEMBLE AND INSPECT SLIP CLUTCH in Service section.)

      If marks are not aligned, clutch has slipped:

      1. Loosen (turn counterclockwise) four M8 nuts (D) allowing spring to apply pressure to clutch disks.
      2. Measure gap (E) between clutch plate (A) and belleville spring (D). If gap is not within specification, evenly adjust six lock nuts (C) until gap is to specification.

5. CAUTION: Avoid bodily injury or death from entanglement in rotating drivelines. Replace all shielding removed and replace any missing or damaged shielding. Never operate machine without shielding.

   Close and fasten PTO shield.
