Attach PTO Driveline

Shut off tractor engine before attaching PTO driveline. Entanglement in rotating driveline can cause serious injury or death.

IMPORTANT: Keep driveline and powershaft splines clean of paint, dirt, and chaff. Apply John Deere SD POLYUREA grease or equivalent on tractor PTO shaft before attaching PTO driveline.

  1. Shut off tractor engine.

  2. Raise tractor PTO shield, if equipped.

  3. IMPORTANT:

    B - Plastic Shield and Net

    Do not use plastic shield (B) to lift driveline into position. Damage to shield can occur.

    Support driveline by hand.



  4. Pull collar (A) back toward cutter until locked in open position.

  5. Align splines by rotating rotary cutter driveline.

  6. Push driveline onto tractor PTO shaft until collar snaps into place.

  7. Pull back on shield (B) to verify that driveline is locked. Do not pull collar, the latch will release .

  8. Lower tractor PTO shield, if equipped.

  9. Attach PTO driveline shield chain to a fixed point on tractor.

  10. IMPORTANT: Slip clutch components must be free to rotate when necessary. Clutch disk linings can bond to metal parts during non-use, especially in damp or humid conditions. To avoid machine damage, verify that slip clutch is operating correctly. (See Freeing Slip Clutch procedure in Lubrication and Maintenance section.)

    C - Lock Nut (6 used)

    D - M8 Adjuster Nut (4 used)

    E - Gap

    If cutter is being returned to service from seasonal storage,

    • Tighten six lock nuts (C) evenly on slip clutch to apply spring load to clutch.
    • Verify that gap (E) between clutch plate (A) and belleville spring (B) is at specification. Adjust four adjuster nuts (D) until gap is in specification.

    If cutter is being used regularly,

    • Verify that slip clutch is free to rotate as needed.
    • If clutch has seized, free slip clutch and adjust spring load. (See Freeing Slip Clutch procedure in Lubrication and Maintenance section.)
