RS232 Harness Kit

RS232 harness kit connects third-party controllers or a global positioning system (GPS) receiver to a GreenStar™ 3 2630 Display. Kit includes:

  • Installation Instructions
  • Null modem
  • Gender changer
  • Harness

If both a third-party controller and receiver are connected to a GS3 2630 Display simultaneously, two PF90363 kits are required. Original GreenStar™ Field Doc™ Connect harness is only compatible with GS3 2630 Display through this harness. When using original Field Doc™ Connect harness, select Com Port 1 in documentation setup.

Documentation With Third-Party Controllers

GS3 2630 Display and Original GreenStar™ Display support the same third-party controllers. For a list of controllers, contact your John Deere dealer.

Two serial ports are available in GS3 2630 Display: Port 1 and Port 2.

Connect DB9 connector to controller. Gender changer and null modem are required when connecting to Rawson and New Leader controllers. Properly configure controller to communicate with GS3 2630 Display. On display, select Menu button > GS3 button > Equipment softkey > COM Port button.

Verify settings under data menu on Raven controller:

  • BAUD = 9600
  • TRIG = 1
  • UNIT = sec
  • DLOG = on

Verify settings on Rawson or New Leader controller:

  • BIT 7 MODE = on
  • GPS MODE = on (for prescriptions only)

The following settings must match between controller and GS3 2630 Display COM Port settings:

  • Control channel
  • Mid-point
  • Step Size

Connect to Com A on Rawson controller for a planting-only operation. Connect to Com B for a product application-only operation, or a planting with product application operation.

GS3 2630 Display controls only one controller channel, so only one prescription can be used.

Connect Third-Party Receiver

NOTE: AutoTrac™ requires CAN GPS messages from a StarFire™ Receiver.

Non-John Deere GPS receivers that output National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 0183 standard messages can be used for documentation and manual guidance with a GreenStar™ display. Set up receiver to output the following messages:

  • GGA
  • GSA
  • RMC at 19200 baud (Fixed and Non-adjustable)
  • Data bits 8
  • Parity none
  • Stop bits 1
  • Flow Control none
  • 1 or 5 Hz output rate (Guidance requires 5 Hz.)

From receiver manufacturer's wiring diagram, determine which wires from receiver are transmit and ground. Verify receiver transmit connects to pin 3 and receiver ground connects to pin 5 of DB9 connector. Pinout numbers are displayed on front face of connector and backside of connector where wires are inserted.

To connect harness to GS3 2630 Display:

  1. Remove display harness from back of display and machine power sources.

  2. Square 26-pin display connector has built-in pin locking mechanism.

    1. Using flat screwdriver, depress white locking tab. It depresses approximately 3 mm (1/8 in.).

    2. Two tabs on opposite side are exposed, and connector pins are unlocked.

  3. Use chart to determine pin locations for serial port utilized. For example, serial Port 1 uses pin locations 2, 22, 23, 24, and 25.

  4. Use needle-nosed pliers to remove white plugs from pins.

  5. Insert harness wires into correct pin locations. Needle-nosed pliers may be needed to push pins through orange seal in connector.

  6. Once pins are against connector face, push two locking tabs to lock pins in place.
