Inspect and Adjust Alternator/Fan Belt (5220 and 5320)

Replace if worn or damaged. (See procedure in Service section.)

NOTE: Run engine for five minutes to warm a cold belt. Let a hot belt cool for 15 minutes before adjustment.

Check tension by pressing belt midway between pulleys. Belt deflection should be to specification.

Specification

Belt Tension -Deflection 19 mm (3/4 in.) at 89 N (20 lb-force)

IMPORTANT: Pry against alternator frame only.

Adjust tension by loosening tension adjustment cap screw (A) and alternator mounting cap screw (B). Apply force to alternator frame (C) until belt tension is correct. Tighten tension adjustment cap screw and alternator mounting cap screw.
