Determining Maximum Ballast

RXA0099952-UN-10DEC08

A - Front Idler Wheel

B - Track

IMPORTANT: Do not overload tractor. If maximum recommended weight of 17840 kg (39550 lb) is not enough, reduce load.

Use appropriate front ballast for a particular operating condition. Tractors should have only enough ballast to maintain steering control.

Adjust ballast as tractor use changes. For example, adjust ballast when changing from mounted to towed implements.

Remove ballast if tractor engine labors when pulling heavy loads in gears slower than 7.2 km/h (4.5 mph).

Check front-to-rear balance. Correct front-to-rear balance should be maintained whenever ballast is added or removed. A good way to check for correct balance is driving or walking along side of tractor during operation and visually checking to ensure entire contact area of track (B) is in contact with soil surface at all times with implement engaged.

Adjustments need to be made to the implement gauge wheels or more front weight may have to be added if the front of tractor pitches upward and daylight can be seen between front idler wheel and soil surface.

Ballast Types

QuikTach™ weights on the front support are the preferred form of ballast, then engine side wights. Other forms of ballast include front idler wheel weights.

In some cases, it may be necessary or desirable to remove ballast. The preferred location of additional ballast is in front of the tractor center of gravity. A QUIK-TATCH weight facilitates this for front ballast.

QUIK-TATCH Weights on Front Weight Support

QUIK-TATCH Weights weigh 47 kg (104 lb) each. Up to 22 weights can be installed on the front weight support. The first two weights must be installed as a pair.

Run retaining bolts (B) through holes and secure with a nut to hold six weights or fewer in position.

Insert retainers between weights, one with threaded hole upward (C) and the other with threaded hole downward. when eight or more weights are installed, tighten bolt to specification.

B - Retaining Bolts

Up to five 47 kg (104 lb) QUIK-TATCH weights can be added on EACH side of the engine (TEN weights total).

Install an equal number of weights (A) on each side of tractor.

Install retaining bolts (B) through hole and secure with nut to hold five weights or fewer in position.

Front Idler Wheel Weights

A - Front Idler Wheel Weights

NOTE: It is not recommended to use front idler weights since front QUIK-TATCH weights provide better for-aft weight distribution . If for other reasons front QUIK-TATCH weights cannot be used, idler weights may be installed instead.

Tractor front idlers are compatible with current wheel tractor weights. A starter weight must be installed on the front idler wheel before installing cast wheel weights. Fully ballasted tractor will accommodate one 80 lb starter weight, one 160 lb cast wheel weight, and one 450 lb cast wheel weight on both the inside and outside of each front idler. The same weight configuration must be used on inside and outside (A) of each front idler.

Using Mounted Spray Tanks

Spray Tanks Mounting Points

A - Holes

Use following guidelines when attaching and using tractor-mounted spray tanks:

Use holes (A) not being used to support track frame. Do NOT remove any cap screws used to mount track frame to walking beam.

Tanks should be limited to 1894 L (500 gal.) per side, to limit maximum vehicle laden weight to 19, 958 kg (44,000 lb).

Front mounted spray tanks are NOT recommended. However, if a front mounted tank must be used, remove front weights. Filled front mounted tank should not add more than the equivalent of 22 front weights and support or 1210 kg (2660 lb.).

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD A FRONT SPRAY TANK BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH FRONT WEIGHTS.

Contact your John Deere™ dealer for additional spray tank mounting guidelines for complete tank mounting instructions.
