Diesel Fuel
To confirm which engine your tractor is equipped
with, see RECORD ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER in Identification Numbers Section
180 in this Operator's Manual.
Consult your local fuel distributor for properties of the diesel
fuel available in your area.
In general, diesel fuels are blended to satisfy the low temperature
requirements of the geographical area in which they are marketed.
Diesel fuels specified to EN 590 or ASTM D975 are recommended.
Renewable diesel fuel produced by hydrotreating animal fats and vegetable
oils is basically identical to petroleum diesel fuel. Renewable diesel
that meets EN 590 or ASTM D975 is acceptable for use at all percentage
mixture levels.
Required Fuel Properties
In all cases, the fuel shall meet the following properties:
Cetane number of 43 minimum. Cetane
number greater than 47 is preferred, especially for temperatures below
–20 °C (–4 °F) or elevations above 1500 m (5000
ft).
Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP)
should be at least 5 °C (9 °F) below the expected lowest temperature
or Cloud Point below the expected lowest
ambient temperature.
Fuel lubricity should pass a maximum
scar diameter of 0.45 mm as measured by ASTM D6079 or ISO 12156-1.
Diesel fuel quality and sulfur content must comply with all existing emissions
regulations for the are in which the engine operates. DON NOT use
diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 10 000 mg/kg (10 000
ppm).
Sulfur content for Interim Tier 4 and Stage III B
Engines
-
Use ONLY ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel with a maximum
of 15 mg/kg (15 ppm) sulfur content.
Sulfur Content for Tier 3 and Stage III A engines
-
Use of diesel fuel with sulfur content less than 1000 mg/kg
(1000 ppm) is RECOMMENDED.
-
Use of diesel fuel with sulfur content 1000—5000 mg/kg
(1000—5000 ppm) REDUCES oil and filter change intervals.
-
BEFORE using diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 5000
mg/kg (5000 ppm), contact your John Deere dealer.
Sulfur Content for Tier 2 and Stage II engines
-
Use of diesel fuel with sulfur content less than 500 mg/kg (500
ppm) is RECOMMENDED.
-
Use of diesel fuel with sulfur content 500—5000 mg/kg
(500—5000 ppm) REDUCES oil and filter change intervals.
-
BEFORE using diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 5000
mg/kg (5000 ppm), contact your John Deere dealer.
Sulfur Content for other engines
-
Use of diesel fuel with sulfur content less than 5000 mg/kg
(5000 ppm) is RECOMMENDED.
-
Use of diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 5000 mg/kg
(5000 ppm), REDUCES the oil and filter change interval.
IMPORTANT: Do not mix used diesel engine oil or any other type
of lubricating oil with diesel fuel. Improper fuel additive
usage may cause damage on fuel injection equipment of diesel engines.
