IMPORTANT: Carefully follow drain and fill procedure to prevent
premature transmission/axle failure.
NOTE: Calibrate transmission if shift characteristics change
after system oil and filter change. See Transmission Calibration in
General Service section of this Operator’s Manual.
The transmission, hydraulic reservoir and rear axle are all included
in the hydraulic system. Change all hydraulic filters at this interval.
See all filter changes in this section.
An oil drain container with a maximum capacity of 310.9 L (82.1
gal) should be used.
-
Park tractor on level surface with drain plugs on each wheel
hub oriented downward.
-
Allow hydraulic oil to cool for 15 minutes.
NOTE: Full system oil capacity is 310.9 L (82.1 gal). Secure
drain pan of sufficient capacity.
-
Remove drain plug (A), located under hydraulic reservoir, to
drain oil from reservoir.
-
Remove Powershift transmission drain plug (B).
-
Remove three rear axle drain plugs (C).
-
Remove plug (D) from each outboard planetary.
-
Replace all transmission, rear axle and outboard planetary drain
plugs. Tighten to specifications.
Item | Measurement | Specification |
Transmission Drain Plugs | Torque | 55 N·m (40 lb-ft) |
Rear Axle and Outboard Planetary Drain Plugs | Torque | 70 N·m (52 lb-ft) |
-
IMPORTANT: When oil is drained from the transmission for a scheduled
oil change, the transmission will need to be pre-filled with 38 L
(10 gal) of Hy-Gard (JDM J20C) oil ONLY or damage could occur to transmission when the
tractor is started.
To ensure proper shift quality, oil
meeting Hy-Gard™ or JDM J20C specifications must be used. Shift
quality problems and/or transmission damage may occur if the specifications
are not followed. See Transmission/Axle and Hydraulic Oil in Fuel,
Lubricants and Coolant section of this Operator’s Manual.
NOTE: Parts removed to better show suction screen.

NOTE: After filling the hydraulic reservoir, start engine and
run for a few minutes to circulate oil through out the system. Shut
engine off and wait 5 minutes to allow oil to stabilize before determining
reservoir oil level. Use rear axle fill tube (B) to add small quantities
of oil during normal field operation.

Hydraulic Oil Reservoir
A - Reservoir Fill Cap
B - FULL COLD Mark
C - MIN COLD Mark
D - High Volume Oil Takeout Mark
Remove reservoir fill cap (A) to add remaining John Deere HY-GARD® or JDM J20C hydraulic
oil volume to hydraulic reservoir, next to the cab entry steps.
NOTE: Clean the hydraulic oil system vent filter, at rear of
cab. See CLEAN HYDRAULIC OIL SYSTEM VENT FILTER in this Section.
The volume capacity between Min “Cold” (C) and Full
“Cold” (B) marks is 11.4 L (3 gal).
If oil level is visible between marks “Min Cold”
(C) and “Full Cold” (B), tractor can be used for normal
operation.
-
Follow oil check procedure for correct oil level.
OIL LEVEL CHECK PROCEDURE:
-
IMPORTANT: DO NOT start engine if oil level is below MIN COLD
mark (C). Add Hy-Gard JDM J20C hydraulic
oil using hydraulic reservoir fill cap.
Transmission lever should be in PARK.
-
Start engine and idle at 1200 rpm for 5 minutes.
-
Shut engine OFF and wait 5 minutes for oil level to stabilize.
-
Check to ensure transmission/hydraulic/axle oil level is visible
between “Full Cold” (B) and “Min Cold” (C)
marks in sight gauge.
NOTE: Hydraulic oil reservoir does not hold all system hydraulic
oil capacity. If possible check oil level before first start of day.
Ambient temperature should be 7° C. (45° F) or above.
For applications and implements requiring high volumes of oil
transfer (for example - large air seeders or pulling 3 scrapers),
hydraulic reservoir can be filled up to High Oil Volume Takeout Oil
Mark (D). 126.4 L (33.4 gal) above MIN COLD (C).
As the tractor and hydraulic system get hot, the oil level will
rise (increase) in the reservoir.
Oil level in the reservoir will fluctuate depending upon volume
of oil exchanged with an attached implement. The pressure sensor will
send alert if pressure falls too low due to low oil level.
NOTE: The powershift transmission only needs to be recalibrated
if transmission shift characteristics change after hydraulic/transmission/axle
oil and filters are changed. See Powershift Transmission Calibration
in General Maintenance and Inspection Section.
-
IMPORTANT: Excess hydraulic oil can result in decreased engine
power and decrease fuel economy.
If oil level is above the “Full Cold” mark, remove oil to bring it down to the “Full
Cold" mark level.
The recommended method to remove reservoir oil is using the
reservoir drain plug and direct oil into a container.
