Measure Track Slip

Track slip measurement requires an implement attached to tractor. Manual measurement also requires an assistant. Avoid physical injury. Ensure assistant is clear of tractor and implement during procedure.

Adding ballast cannot overcome incorrect engine speed settings. Under normal field conditions, ideal track slip is 2-5%. If track slip is:

  • Less than 2%, remove ballast. Do not remove ballast if required for stability.
  • More than 5%, add ballast. Do not exceed 28122 kg (62000 lb) maximum ballasted tractor weight.

There are two methods to measure track slip:

  • Automatic: Track slip is measured automatically in tractors with optional (factory- or dealer-installed) dual-beam radar1. See Machine Monitor in CommandCenter™ section of this Operator’s Manual.
  • Manual: For tractors without dual-beam radar, follow procedure below.

To manually measure track slip:

  1. RXA0152657
    RXA0152657-UN-03APR17

Mark a location on drive wheel (A) easily viewable by assistant.

  2. Mark starting point on ground (B).

  3. Lower implement and drive tractor forward at working speed.

  4. Have assistant follow tractor and mark ground when drive wheel completes 10 full revolutions (C).

  5. Raise implement and return tractor to original starting point. Line-up mark on drive wheel with starting point or make new mark on drive wheel.

  6. With implement raised, drive tractor forward at working speed.

  7. Have assistant follow tractor and count drive wheel revolutions (to the nearest 1/4 revolution) (D) until you reach the previously marked end-point.

  8. Use the second count to determine track slip on chart. Ideal slip is 2-5%. If indicated, adjust ballast and repeat procedure.
