A - Tensioner Arm


See Checking Belt Wear in the Lubrication & Maintenance - 500 Hours/12 Months Section to determine if belts need replacing.

NOTE: While belt is removed, inspect pulleys and bearings. Rotate and feel for hard turning or any unusual sounds. If pulleys or bearings need replacement, see your John Deere dealer.

IMPORTANT: ALWAYS replace belts as a matched set.

    Fan and Alternator Belts and Tensioners

    A - Fan Drive Belt

    B - Alternator Drive Belt

    C - Automatic Tensioner, Fan Belt

    D - Automatic Tensioner, Alternator Belt

    Release tension on the upper belt (A) which is furthermost from timing gear cover using a 3/4 in. drive tool in square hole in tensioner arm (C).



  2. Remove belt (A) from pulleys and discard belt. Remove tool.

  3. Release tension on the belt (B) closest to the timing gear cover using a 1/2 in. drive tool in square hole in tensioner arm (D).

  4. Remove belt (B) from pulleys and discard belt.

  5. Install new belt (B) closest to the timing gear cover. Be sure that belt is correctly seated in all pulley grooves.

  6. Release belt tensioner (D) to apply tension to belt. Remove drive tool.

  7. Install new belt (A) farthermost from timing gear cover. Be sure that belt is correctly seated in all pulley grooves.

  8. Release belt tension to apply tension to belt. Remove drive tool.

  9. Visually check belt alignment before starting engine.

  10. Start engine and visually check belt alignment.
