Monthly Storage Procedure

causym CAUTION: Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death. Start engine ONLY in a well-ventilated area.

1. Drain water and sediment from fuel tank when air temperature is above freezing.

2. Remove LPS 3 1 Rust Inhibitor from cylinder rods with a cleaning solvent.

causym CAUTION: Prevent serious injury or death from unexpected machine movement. Always install the loader boom service lock, or lower the front loader boom fully to the ground, and move control levers to release hydraulic pressure before working near the front of the machine. (See Loader Boom Service Lock in Periodic Maintenance chapter for installation instructions.)

IMPORTANT: Do not raise or lower the front loader boom while the engine hood is open. Always close the engine hood fully before moving the front loader boom, or severe damage to the engine hood will occur. (See Opening and Closing the Engine Hood in Periodic Maintenance chapter for instructions.)

3. Close engine hood. (See Opening and Closing the Engine Hood in Periodic Maintenance chapter for instructions.)

4. Raise front loader boom and install loader boom service lock. (See Loader Boom Service Lock in Periodic Maintenance chapter for installation instructions.)

5. Stop engine.

6. Fully open engine hood.

IMPORTANT: Prevent possible engine damage. During cold temperatures, check fluidity of engine oil on dipstick. If the oil appears waxy and/or jelly-like rather than liquid, DO NOT attempt to start engine. Use external heat source to warm the crankcase until oil appears fluid.

7. Check all fluid levels. If low, check for leaks and add oil as required.

8. Check belts.

9. Check condition of all hoses and connections.

10. Check electrolyte level. Charge and install battery.

11. Check condition of tires. Check tire pressure.

12. Fill fuel tank. (See Fuels and Lubricants chapter.)

13. Pre-lubricate turbocharger bearings:

  • Disconnect fuel shutoff fuse (B).
  • Crank engine for 10 seconds.
  • Connect fuel shutoff fuse.

14. Start engine. Run at 1/2 speed for 5 minutes. Do not run at fast or slow idle.

15. Bleed fuel system. If engine fails to start or runs poorly after starting, change fuel filter(s). Bleed fuel system again.

16. Close engine hood.

17. Make sure that area is clear to allow for machine movement. Operate (cycle) loader boom and bucket, backhoe boom, dipperstick, bucket, and swing functions for three complete cycles.

18. Raise machine until tires are off the ground using front bucket and stabilizers. Engage transmission and run for five minutes, shifting gears approximately every minute.

19. Park the machine with cylinder rods retracted.

20. Apply LPS 3 Rust Inhibitor to the exposed cylinder rod areas.
