Operational Checkout

Use this procedure to check all systems and functions on the machine. It is designed so you can make a quick check of machine operation while doing a walk around inspection and performing specific checks from the operator's seat.

Should you experience a problem with your machine, you will find helpful diagnostic information in this checkout that will pinpoint the cause. This information may allow you to perform a simple adjustment yourself which will reduce the down time of your machine. Use the table of contents to help find adjustment procedures.

The information you provide after completing the operational checkout will allow you or your authorized dealer to pinpoint a specific test or repair needed to restore the machine to design specifications.

A location will be required which is level and has adequate space to complete the checks. No tools or equipment are needed to perform the checkout.

Complete the necessary visual checks (oil levels, oil condition, external leaks, loose hardware, linkage, wiring, etc.) prior to doing the checkout. The machine must be at operating temperature for many of the checks.

Start at the top of the left column and read completely down column before performing check. Follow this sequence from left to right. In the far right column, if no problem is found, you will be instructed to go to next check. If a problem is indicated, you will be referred to either a section in this manual or to your authorized dealer for repair.

1 Engine Start Lockout Checks

Shut-Off Valve

Shear Machine Shown

A-Hydraulic Tank Shut-Off Valve

Close hydraulic tank shut-off valve (A). Turn key to start.

Go to next check.

Repair start lockout switch.

Engine Speed Control Linkage Check

Engine OFF.

Right rear engine side panel off.

Check injection pump lever with engine speed control lever pushed completely down to slow idle position.

LOOK: Slow idle stop screw must contact injection pump lever.

Pull engine speed control lever completely up to fast idle position. Check injection pump lever position.

LOOK: Fast idle stop screw must contact injection pump lever.

Go to next check.

2 Gauge and Indicator Checks

Monitor Indicator Check

Turn key switch to bulb check position.

LOOK: Do monitor indicators light?

Go to next check.

Go to your authorized dealer.

Air Filter Restriction Indicator

Start engine, run at fast idle.

LOOK: Air filter restriction indicator must not be illuminated.

Go to next check.

Clean or replace air filter elements. Clean inside of dust cup.

Charge Air Cooler Indicator Check (843H)

Start engine. Run at fast idle with engine at operating temperature.

LOOK: Air intake temperature indicator must not be illuminated.

Go to next check.

Clean charge air cooler coils. Check for operation of charge air cooling fan.

Hour Meter

Start engine.

Observe hour meter.

LOOK: Hour meter indicator must be moving.

NOTE: Since hour meter registers tenths of hour, indicator will move slowly.

Go to next check.

Check fuse. Go to your authorized dealer.

Alternator Charging Indicator

Start engine, run at slow idle.

LOOK: Alternator charge indicator must be off 1-2 seconds after engine starts.

Engine Air Intake Temperature Check (843H)

Start engine.

Let engine warm up.

Observe engine intake temperature indicator.

LOOK: Indicator must be off.

Go to next check.

Check air inlet screens. Check fan motor. Check temperature sensor. Go to your authorized dealer.

Engine Oil Pressure Indicator Check

Start engine.

Observe engine oil pressure indicator.

LOOK: Indicator must be off.

Go to next check.

Check engine oil level. Go to your authorized dealer.

Engine Water Temperature Gauge Check

Let engine warm up.

LOOK: As engine warms up, temperature gauge indicator must move toward the green zone.

NOTE: With engine fully warmed up, indicator must be in the green zone.

Go to next check.

Check fuse. Go to your authorized dealer.

Transmission Oil Temperature Gauge Check

Start engine.

Operate machine at high speed for several minutes.

LOOK: As machine warms up, transmission oil temperature gauge must move toward the right.

Go to next check.

Filter Restriction Indicators

Start engine and run at fast idle.

Observe transmission and hydraulic oil filter restriction indicators.

LOOK: Indicators must be OFF.

NOTE: Cold oil may cause indicators to come on during initial operation. After warm-up, indicators must go out.

Go to next check.

Replace plugged filter. Go to your authorized dealer.

3 Brake System Checks

Park Brake Check

Start engine.

Push park brake switch ON.

LOOK: Park brake indicator must be on.

Go to next step in this check.

Go to your authorized dealer.

Push park brake switch OFF.

Slowly press forward pedal (A).

LOOK: Machine must travel forward.

Press reverse pedal (B).

LOOK: Machine must travel in reverse.

Go to next step in this check.

Go to your authorized dealer.

Park brake switch OFF.

Turn key switch OFF and stop engine.

Start engine.

LOOK: Park brake indicator must be on.

Go to next step in this check.

Go to your authorized dealer.

LOOK: Machine must not move.

Push park brake switch ON and then OFF.

LOOK: Park brake indicator (1) must be off.

Park Brake Operation Check

Start engine and run at slow idle with transmission in low "LO".

Park brake switch OFF.

Press forward pedal enough to move machine.

With machine moving at slow speed, push park brake switch ON.

LOOK: Park brake must be on.
LOOK: Machine must stop.

Go to next check.

Brake System Leakage Check

causym CAUTION: Machine may move during this check.

Release park brake.

Put two-speed gearbox switch in high (H) position.

Run engine at slow idle.

Depress and hold brake pedal (1) for 2 minutes.

Depress forward speed control pedal.

LOOK: Machine must not move.

NOTE: If brake holds for a period of time and then releases, leakage in brake valve or piston seals is indicated.

Go to next check.

Service Brake Pressure Switch Check

causym CAUTION: Machine will move during this check.

Run engine at 1/2 speed.

Put two-speed gearbox switch in high (H) position.

Release park brake.

Rotate ground speed limiter knob fully clockwise to "rabbit" position.

Fully depress forward speed control pedal.

causym CAUTION: Prevent possible personal injury. Wear seat belt. Machine may come to an abrupt halt.

Quickly and fully apply service brake (1).

LOOK/LISTEN: Machine must stop and engine rpm must not decrease

4 Steering System Checks

Steering Valve Checks (Wheel Steer Machines)

Run engine at slow idle.

Turn steering wheel until frames are at maximum right (A) and then left (B) positions.

LOOK: Frames must move in both directions.

When steering wheel is stopped, frames must stop.

FEEL: Excessive effort must not be required to turn steering wheel.

Go to next check.

See your authorized dealer.

Steering Valve Check (Lever Steer)

Run engine at slow idle.

Move lever (1) to the left and to the right.

LOOK: Machine must articulate.

When lever is stopped, machine must not articulate.

Go to next check.

Hydraulic Oil Warm-Up Procedure

Start engine and run at fast idle.

Tilt harvesting head back. Hold lever in activated position.

Periodically cycle all functions and drive machine forward and reverse to distribute warm oil through hydraulic system.

Heat oil to specification (approximately 50°C [120°F]).

Go to next check.

5 Driving Checks

NOTE: Transmission oil must be at operating temperature for these checks.

Two-Speed Gearbox Gear Speed Selector Check

Start engine and run at fast idle.

Drive machine with gear speed selector (1) in low "LO".

Stop machine.

Apply park brake.

Switch gear speed selector to high "HI".

Disengage park brake.

Drive machine.

FEEL: Does ground speed increase?

Go to next check.

Go to your authorized dealer.

Differential Lock Check

Park machine on a hard surface.

Release park brake and service brakes.

Push differential lock button (1) to ON.

LOOK: Differential lock indicator must be on.

Steer machine back and forth.

LOOK: Front and rear wheels must not turn in opposite directions.

NOTE: On dry concrete, steering system will not turn machine. It will go over relief.

Hydrostatic (HST) Speed Check

NOTE: HST Speed Check requires a 46 m (150 ft) section of level ground.

Mark off a 30.4 m (100 ft) section of ground.

Put two-speed gearbox switch in low "LO".

Run engine at fast idle.

Rotate ground speed limiter knob fully clockwise to "rabbit" position (if equipped).

Starting 7.6 m (25 ft) before measured area, depress pedal fully to forward position.

Observe required time to travel to measured area.

LOOK: Machine must travel measured area in less than 13.5 seconds.

Go to next check.

Inspect pedal. Go to your authorized dealer.

Transmission Shift Modulation Check

Run engine at 1/2 speed.

Shift two-speed gearbox switch in low (L) range.

Rotate ground speed limiter knob fully clockwise to "Rabbit" position (if equipped).

Depress forward pedal (A) and then reverse pedal (B) fully.

LOOK/FEEL: Machine must slow down and change direction smoothly but must not have a delay when accelerating in the opposite direction.

6 Hydraulic System Checks

Saw/Shear Lift and Tilt Lever Check

Move control lever to each position and then release.

LOOK: Lever must return to neutral when released from all positions.

Move control lever to each position and then release.

LOOK: Lever must return to neutral when released.

Engine stopped.

Depress pedals (A and B) and release.

LOOK: The pedals must return to neutral.

Repair pilot controller. Go to your authorized dealer.

Accumulator Arm(s) Solenoid Valve Check

Engine running.

Depress and hold accumulator switch (1) to the left until the accumulator arm(s) fully opens.

Depress and hold solenoid switch to the right until the accumulator arm(s) completely closes.

LOOK: Accumulator arm(s) must only move when switch is depressed, and must open and close smoothly.

Go to next check.

Go to your authorized dealer.

Saw On/Off Solenoid Check

Engine running.

Run engine at fast idle.

Press saw switch (1) to "ON" position.

LOOK: Does saw run?

Go to next check.

Saw/Shear Lift and Tilt Cylinder Drift Check

Engine running.

Raise saw/shear about 50 mm (2 in.) (1) off ground with saw/shear level.

Stop engine. Wait 1 minute.

LOOK: Saw/shear must not touch ground.

NOTE: Use good judgment to determine if the amount of drift is objectionable for your application.

Go to next check.

Saw/Shear Lift Control Valve Lift Check

Raise saw/shear slightly above ground.

Slowly activate boom raise.

LOOK: Boom must not lower before raising.

Tilt Control Valve Tilt Check

Engine running.

Tilt saw/shear forward approximately 45°.

Slowly activate saw/shear tilt-back function.

LOOK: Saw/shear must not tilt forward before it tilts rearward.

Saw/Shear System Relief Valve and Shear Close Circuit Relief Valve Check

Run engine at fast idle.

Operate machine to cut a tree up to 432 mm (17 in.) hardwood, or 508 mm (20 in.) soft wood.

LOOK: Saw/shear must cut smoothly through tree.

Run engine at slow idle.

Raise boom to full height.

LOOK: Boom must raise to full height.

7 Accessory Checks

NOTE: Engine should be stopped and key switch should be in ACC position for these checks.

Dome Light Check

Move dome light switch on and off.

LOOK: Dome light must come on, then go off.

Go to next check.

Check fuse and bulbs. Go to your authorized dealer.

Windshield Wiper Check

Turn wiper switch knob clockwise to first detent position.

LOOK: Wiper must operate at low speed.

Turn wiper switch knob clockwise to second detent position.

LOOK: Wiper must operate at high speed.

Turn wiper switch knob counterclockwise to off position.

LOOK: Wiper arm and blade must park at top of windshield.

Push wiper switch.

LOOK: Does washer fluid spray on windshield?

Go to next check.

Check fuse. Go to your authorized dealer.

Horn Circuit Check

Push horn button.

Fan Check

Move switch (A) to the right.

LOOK: Fan must run at slow speed.

Move switch to the left.

LOOK: Fan must run at fast speed.

Move switch to the center position.

LOOK: Fan must stop running.

Pressurized Water System

LOOK: Pressure gauge must indicate pressure.

Turn valve handle (1) so handle is in line with hose.

Squeeze nozzle trigger (2).

LOOK: Water must spray from nozzle.

Turn valve handle so handle is perpendicular to hose.

Squeeze nozzle trigger.

LOOK: After hose clears, water flow must stop. Nozzle gun and swivel fitting must not leak.

Go to next check.

Replace failed parts. Go to your authorized dealer.

Heater/Air Conditioner Blower Check

Turn blower switch to low, medium, and high speeds.

FEEL/LISTEN: Blower must have three speeds and OFF.

Heater Functional Check

Valves on engine must be open.

Start engine and run at fast idle.

Wait 2 minutes.

Turn temperature control switch to maximum heat position and turn blower switch to high speed.

FEEL: Air from ducts must be warm.

Air Conditioner Functional Check

Start engine and run at fast idle.

Turn temperature control switch (3) to maximum COOL setting and turn blower switch (1) to high speed.

Wait for any warm air in duct system to dissipate.

Push air conditioner switch (2) on.

FEEL: Air from ducts must be cool.

Cab Air Recirculation/Fresh Air Valve Check

With engine off, turn cab air recirculation/fresh air valve knob (1) clockwise and then counterclockwise.

FEEL: You should feel resistance at the knob. Knob should stop when valve is fully opened or closed.

8 Cab Components Checks

Cab Door Latch

Unlatch door.

Inspect door seals.

LOOK: Door handle must work freely. Door seal must not be damaged.

Close door.

LOOK: Door must close securely. Latch must hold door closed. Door seals must contact door opening and prevent air entry.

Go to next check.

Lubricate or repair locks. Go to your authorized dealer.

Exit Window Outside Latch

Unlatch exit window.

Inspect exit window seals.

LOOK: Exit window handle must work freely. Exit window seal must not be damaged.

Close exit window.

LOOK: Exit window must close securely. Latch must hold exit window closed. Exit window seals must contact door opening and prevent air entry.

Cab Door Lock and Exit Window Lock

Lock door and exit window.

LOOK: Latch handles must not move.
FEEL: Locks must operate freely and key must not stick in locks.

With door closed, push handle down.

LOOK: Handle must move smoothly and unlatch door.

With exit door closed, push handle rearward.

LOOK: Exit door latch must unlatch smoothly and allow door to open.

Cab Door Gas Cylinder

Unlatch cab door.

LOOK: Gas cylinder must push door open and hold it open.

Go to next check.

Replace gas cylinder.

Exit Window Sliding Glass

Squeeze latches (A). Slide upper glass down.

LOOK: Latches must squeeze easily and not bind.

Latches must clear notches in frame to allow glass to slide down.

Glass must slide down and up smoothly without binding.

Go to next check.

Repair or replace.

Air Ride Seat and Seat Belt

Lift lever (1) to adjust height of seat. There are three height positions. Release lever when desired position has been achieved.

FEEL: Seat must move freely up and down and lock in all positions.

Push knob (4) to activate seat compressor to inflate air bag.

FEEL: Air bag must inflate, raising seat bottom.

Pull knob to release air pressure from air bag.

FEEL: Air bag must deflate, lowering seat bottom.

Rotate knob (2) to adjust seat back angle.

FEEL: Seat back angle must move freely in both directions.

Pull lever (3) to the left to move seat forward or backward.

FEEL: Seat must move freely in both directions and lock in place securely.

Rotate knob (5) clockwise to increase lumbar support.

FEEL: Lumbar support must move forward, against operator's back, or rearward, away from operator's back.

NOTE: On wheel steer machines check only right-hand armrest. On lever steer machines check both right- and left-hand armrests.

Loosen knobs (6 and 7) to adjust armrest forward and backward positions and height.

FEEL: Armrest must move freely in all directions. Knobs must tighten to hold armrest securely in position.

Engine Side Panels (6 Panels)

For Front and Rear Side Panels (1):

Turn handle to unlatch panel.

Tilt top of panel away from machine and lift upward to remove panel.

Install panel.

LOOK: Tabs on bottom of side panel must hook over compartment ledge.
LOOK: Latch must engage and hold side panel against hood and compartment side.

Repeat check for remaining front and rear side panels.

For Middle Side Panel (2):

Remove cap screws located at corners of panel.

Remove panel.

Install panel.

LOOK: Does panel sit flush on top and bottom rails.

Go to next check.

Lubricate latch. Repair door.

Service Decal

Check service decal (inside cab door to left of seat).

LOOK: Service decal must be legible.

Operational checkout completed.

Replace service decal. Go to your authorized dealer.
