Replacing Mower Spindle Bearings

32 and 36 in. Decks

  1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

  2. IMPORTANT: Spaces and washers above and below pulley are in different locations on each spindle on deck assembly. Be certain to install in exact location as removed when assembling spindle assembly.

    Remove mower blade.

    Remove nut (A), flat washer (B), spacer (C) and pulley (D).



  4. Remove lower bearing (G) and spacer (H) from spindle housing (I). Discard bearing (G).

  5. Remove and discard upper bearing (J).

  6. Clean entire assembly.

  7. IMPORTANT: The clearance between the lower bearing and the housing is only 0.05 mm (0.002 in.). Do not force bearing into housing.

    NOTE: A replacement service spindle assembly uses a retaining ring (E) to hold the spindle parts together during shipping. Remove and discard this retaining ring (E) before installation if a service assembly is used.

    Install a new lower bearing and spacer on the spindle shaft.

  8. Install the spindle shaft, lower bearing and spacer into the spindle housing.

  9. Install the upper bearing.

  10. Install retaining ring.

  11. Install pulley, spacer, washer, and nut. Tighten nut to specifications.

  12. Grease the spindle lubrication fitting (K). (See Lubricating Points in the SERVICE LUBRICATION Section.)

  13. Install mower blade, blade washers and blade assembly with blade bolt. Tighten bolt to specifications.
