Diagnostics

Diagnostic functions are provided by the electronic control module to help diagnose problems starting the engine.

The following conditions must be met to energize the starter solenoid and engage the starter motor:

  • Park brake locked.
  • Mow-transport lever in the transport position.
  • Motion control levers are in the neutral position.
  • Key switch in the START position.

  • If engine does not turn over, hold the key in the START position, the diagnostic indicator light (A) on the indicator light module will begin to flash a diagnostic code.

Diagnostic code label (B) is located on right side console beside operator’s seat.

If any codes are flashing other than the ones described on the diagnostic code label or listed below, refer to the Technical Manual or consult your John Deere distributor.

• Code 1-2 (One pulse followed by a short pause by two pulses). indicates that the park brake switch has not been activated during an attempted engine start or while the engine is idled with the operator out of the seat. Lock park brake to start engine.

• Code 1-3 (One pulse followed by a short pause followed by three pulses). Indicates that there was an attempted start with the PTO turned on. Turn PTO switch OFF before attempting to start.

This code will also flash if the machine and PTO are running with the brake released and the operator leaves the seat. The engine and PTO will stop. Turn PTO switch OFF.

• Code 2-1 (Two pulses followed by a short pause followed by one pulse). Indicates motion control levers are not in the NEUTRAL position during an attempted start. Be certain both motion control levers are in the neutral position before attempting to start.

This code will also flash if the park brake is applied with the motion control levers out of the neutral position. The engine will stop.

• Code 2-4 (Two pulses followed by a short pause followed by four pulses). Indicates the starter has been engaged for 20 seconds and then disengaged by the control module. Turn the switch to the OFF position and begin another start sequence.

NOTE: Engaging the starter, without engine start, is limited by the controller to a total time of 60 seconds.

• Code 2-5 (Two pulses followed by a short pause followed by five pulses). Indicates that the control module has started a 60-second cool-down period to prevent the starter from overheating. Turn key switch to OFF position and let the starter cool down for at least 60 seconds before making another attempt to start engine.

• Code 2-6 (Two pulses followed by a short pause followed by six pulses). Indicates engine coolant or hydraulic oil has exceed the high temperature limit. Allow machine to cool before attempting further operation.

• Code 3-1 (Three pulses followed by a short pause followed by one pulse). Indicates that there is over voltage within the electrical system. The PTO may disengage when this code flashes. (See Diagnostic Light Check in SERVICE ELECTRICAL section).

• Code 3-2 (Three pulses followed by a short pause followed by two pulses). Indicates a low voltage condition within the electrical system. (See Diagnostic Light Check in SERVICE ELECTRICAL section).
